Let it been a warning to people wanting to take the trip, We can only hope we have more of these boats sink so close to Indonesia. Boat sunk 50m off Indonesia's shore, Its clear these people have no idea of Australia's Culture because we teach our kids how to swim. What kind of people would put their own children's life at risk making such a trip and not teach their kids how to swim first. The parents of the children should be put to death.

This is the conservative mentality we're dealing with.

Chilling.

I've copped a ban for much less than that.

As he should...

why?

He's actually wishing for the senseless death of more children, and calling for the murder of their parents.

It's such a shame that we have "people" like this in Australia.  It gives us all a bad name.  But then again, with a "leader" like Abbott it's hardly surprising that attitudes like this prevail.

It's going to get worse. We're not looking at people going on a sightseeing cruise for the day - these people are desperate and would probably jump on a rubber dinghy if it was available.

We are also going to see a lot more RW hatred and policy regression. Australia will become a country which only caters to the survival of the strongest. We will no longer be a compassionate country unless it involves making money and then that compassion will only be directed towards the corporations eg. lower wages, less regulation and less company tax.

Let's be honest - how have the asylum seekers affected our lives? We rarely hear of their crimes and mostly they keep to themselves. Perhaps it is the thought of sharing a little with those who are less fortunate.

I see it for what it is, Child abuse, I know child abuse is something you lefties get off on, Its Time to call a spade a spade, you put you kid on a boat without them knowing how to swim, then its clear. IT IS... CHILD ABUSE.

So, an asylum seeker is illegitimate if they cant swim?

(and of course your immoral racist stance on asylum seekers is very narrowly applied to people of certain skin colour and cultural background - isn't that right you putrid foul mouthed right winged clown puppet)

ITs very much a racial issue. This country has been founded upon racism, imperialism and fascism.

If a natural disaster occurred in New Zealand or in Europe for example, and refugees started arriving in boats on our shores, and they were of a fairer skin colour and spoke English very well, and know about McDonalds and Coke Cola etc, they would be treated completely differently. They would be interviewed, humanised, validated, welcomed etc

Belgium which is a far smaller country than Australia, with far less riches and land area, accepted about 50,000 asylum seekers last year alone.

The UK is similar and almost all European nations take far more than their quotas and responsibilities under the international treaties and agreements they have signed.

Australia is almost totally alone in this regard, having only 2 or 3 other countries with similar draconian policies on asylum seekers which are essentially based upon racism.

Its not ILLEGAL to seek asylum in another country.

What is illegal is the policy of the Australian government

Have you been able to substantiate that?   Third time you have posted your Belgium factoid and I predict this will be the third time you avoid providing an reference for your claim.

How many boats did they let in?

Belgium which is a far smaller country than Australia takes in about 50,000 asylum seekers each year.

Australia has obligations to take in about 6000 asylum seekers each year.

about 95% of asylum seekers to land on our shores, are eventually classed as legitimate and allowed to stay here.

Something obviously wrong with you and basic comprehension of global realities.

Let me guess - you also believe in GOD and Jesus Christ like Abbott and Howard do.

Belgium takes in 50,000+ asylum seekers and refugees each year, and Belgium is smaller and less wealthy than Australia.

According to the UNHCR Asylum applications in Belgium in

2008 was 12250
2009 was 17190
2010 was 21760
2011 was 26000
2012 was 18520

And as an aside, those figures include repeat applications.

Where are you getting 50 thousand plus per year and over what years and a reference.

Indeed.

So, how many of these parents should be put to death again? Or is that now looking like a bit of an extremist perspective?

There is absolutely no logical reason for labrats to continually blame the government for this tragedy other than they lost the election. This boat sank 50m off Indonesia. Why the bugger would they phone Canberra 25 times to be rescued when Indonesia is a very short distance away; basically within sight of the country in daylight. Reports from the passengers of this boat indicate that Indonesian soldiers actually helped with their embarkation in the first place.......what does that tell you?

That would be the natural response of all non sociopathic and psychopathic human beings. One of empathy and concern.

Unfortunately our society has nurtured and fostered  individualism, materialism, corporatism, short term profits over everything else, fear, greed, hatred, racism, class warfare - you name it.

And it needs to be a sustained propaganda and fear campaign from generation to generation, in order to propp up this evil cartel of socio-psychopaths.

We innately recognise that its wrong.

Good propaganda, Comrade. Only we progressives types are capable of compassion and care. Those nasty conservatives looking after their family and friends first are evil. If only they could be like us progressives and put people who live 10,000 km away as the highest priority. This is progress.

Um, that is also basically propaganda mate.

I know many conservative thinkers that are of the opinion we need something more meaningful that "turn back the boats" as a solution. You know, being compassionate and caring... I also acknowledge that many lefties would seek some mystical high moral ground (which is non existent) claiming they are being compassionate and of course, there are many lefties who do not agree with wholesale allowing people into the country willy nilly as the rampant conservative ones would suggest (through their propaganda).

In short, it is beyond doubt that real solutions need to be developed. They have to be meaningful, easily implemented and, above all, measurable.

Slogans, which seem to be all our current Government has will not cut it. Nor will ineffectual actions like those of the previous Government.

To be blunt, due to their mutual desires to cling to (the myth of) power neither primary party has actually come up with a meaningful, sustainable and measurable long term solution.

A media blackout is also not very encouraging, when all that is ultimately is a form of censorship. I am quite surprised that this has not rattled the chains of the mainstream media who clearly care so much about freedom of the press and free speech and of course which party is Governing the country.
