Farmers (and I mean independent, family farms, not commercial ones) are far more invested in sustainability and care of their environment than the average Green. If the farmers don't care, or get it wrong, they go broke. If environmentalists get it wrong, they just go back to their uni course, or hairdressing job, or the dole officer, and try again later.

Have you seen the damage that inappropriate IMPORTED farming practices has done to the Australian landscape?
It happened in the USA as well, with the wheat belt eventually turning into the DUST BOWL.
The salinity problem in the Murray Golburn region is self destructive and a result of NON sustainable practices over a very short period of time
There are some farmers who understand sustainability and use organic farming techniques - they are few and far in between
