TOUR Gul travelled halfway around the world to escape Afghanistan. An enemy of the Taliban, he was convinced he was a target.
But in 2002, Australia rejected his plea for asylum and sent him home to his death

"He was worried. He knew the Taliban would kill him but the government refused him," said his friend, Salem Haideri.

Mr Gul's death late last year made front-page news in Afghanistan. "A famous leader has been killed innocently, in cold blood by the the anti-Islamic forces," said the Governor of Maidan Wardak province, Mohammed Halim Fedaie. The killing of Mr Gul and another asylum seeker, Mohammed Hussain, have prompted renewed calls for Afghans denied refugee status under the former government to have their cases reopened.

The Age last week revealed four rejected asylum seekers from Afghanistan who travelled on the Tampa have now been found to be genuine refugees, after they risked a second boat trip with people smugglers.

One of the men, Asmatullah Mohammadi, said 11 asylum seekers on Nauru had been killed by the Taliban after they were sent back to Afghanistan.

The director of social justice agency the Edmund Rice Centre, Phil Glendenning, who spent six years travelling the world to investigate the fate of rejected asylum seekers, said he believed 11 deaths was a conservative figure.

Again I'll add Im not championing Rudd/Labor, he's as pathetic as Abbott, pandering to your fear and preconceptions.

The threat of TB and other previously eradicated diseases being re-introduced into Australia is very real. Just last year a government-contracted pilot due to fly a plane load of illegal immigrants to the Australian mainland refused to take off because one passenger had TB. Luckily for all of us, the pilot was very conscientious and responsible in his duties and the plane did not depart. It's not a scare campaign, the fear is very real and the threat very real.

Why thank Rudd?
As the boats were still pouring in daily until the election, and his PNG solution only affected single males anyway.
The rest remained on Christmas Island.
Rudd's half hearted policy was doomed to fail.
Labor never had their hearts in it from the start.

Yeah, Krudds PNG solution was unravelling rapidly, and the details never did not match the rhetoric (as it never did for 6 years)

But hey, its just soooooo hard for the haters to admit that their nemesis, namely PM Abbott, has rubbed their dribbling faces in it.

What a wake up call to the country, this is how its run when competent people are put in charge. The utter disaster of labor cannot be forgotten and should never be forgiven. Dropkicks and deadbeats the fricken lot of 'em.
