The realities of govt . . .I suppose
Oct 31st, 2013 at 1:29pm

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says the live export regulation system is working, despite new footage showing Australian sheep being mistreated in the Middle East. .. . .

.. . . .But Mr Joyce defended the supply chain safeguard.

"We have designed a system to try as much as we can to deal with this issue, so Australian sheep are not treated in this way," he said.

"What we also have to make sure is we don't overreact, there is a continual monitoring process, a process that deals with it."

Mr Joyce told a conference of beef and sheep producers and exporters in Townsville this morning that the Government will scrap an independent animal welfare supervisor position which was promised by the former government to monitor the humane treatment of live exports.

Monitor the treatment of animals?

I thought you'd just have to sit in the back with a semi load of sheep on a 40’C day. No need to go over seas.

It's neither a good look nor a good policy. But Barnaby is right when he says you can't legislate or regulate for everything.
Personally I would ban any live exports to third world countries that didn't comply with our standards and hope not to lynched by NT & Qld farmers.

no one is complaining about how they eat their sheep Cods, boiled fried or baked, no one cares ...

it's about how they kill them. We eat chickens, eggs and beef, but we never slit the beasts throat and wait for them to bleed out 2 hours later

having said that, I think once we sell them it is not our place to dictate to them how to treat them. You can either sell them and shut up, or not sell them. You can't have it both ways.

Well the first step logically would be to ban live exports all together.  After all, you are right when you say we can hardly criticise when our live export industry exploits for profit the ongoing cruel treatment of defenceless animals.

Whilst there is no dispute that our standards need to be constantly reviewed, moderated and improved upon - we can only exercise and demonstrate those practices with the animals that we own. In effect, we can put any kind of dressing around what happens in the Live Export Industry, but, once the money has changed hands it seems evident that so to does any influence of what happens to the Livestock and acts of extreme cruelty continue to be perpetrated.

neither is it fun for humans to be travelling long distances on a train or plane, but we do it (at least I always find it uncomfortable) .. I think it's ridiculous to suggest they may be uncomfortable.

I guess this thread plummeting down the list quickly highlights how much animal cruelty does not really bother many people.

This stuff will continue as long as we (as a Nation) support and continue with Live Exports of Sheep and Cattle.
