Palmer, Newman clash over 'corruption'
Nov 1st, 2013 at 7:35pm

QUEENSLAND Premier Campbell Newman says Clive Palmer is accusing him of corruption because his government stood up to the billionaire's demands for preferential treatment.

Hours after being declared the new federal MP for the seat of Fairfax, Mr Palmer used his victory press conference to accuse Mr Newman's government of corruptly favouring some private firms over others and said he would prove it.

He also claimed Mr Newman and Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie were trying to hold the justice system to ransom over new laws targeting bikies and sex offenders.

But the premier hit back, saying the Palmer United Party leader was now fair game for criticism as an MP.

"His claims are essentially due to the fact that this government stood up to his demands that we provide preferential treatment for his commercial mining interests in Queensland," Mr Newman said.

"He didn't like it but we will always stand up to somebody who does not want to use due process and follow the law."

He warned that Mr Palmer would have to declare his pecuniary interests once he was sworn in.

He also pledged to make sure the mining magnate fulfilled environmental and employment obligations at his nickel plant in Townsville.

Mr Palmer said he had "direct evidence" the government had been benefiting certain private companies to the disadvantage of others.

"We'll be revealing that information soon so people can see that," he told reporters.

He also accused the premier and attorney-general of a "cowardly" attack on the judiciary.

"The government seems to want to be able to set the penalties for people. In Australia we enjoy democracy based on the separation of powers," he said.

"What Campbell Newman wants to do is take the blindfold off Lady Justice and stand behind her with a knife in her back and say, 'you do this or I'll knife you'."

Given Newman's recent behaviour, nothing he does should surprise anyone.

Go get him, Clive!

Curious to see what he is going to say (as always with a slightly insane person like Clive), but I'm not holding my breath for the next watergate scandal out of this based on Clive's previous stunts.

Hilariously ironic considering how he has just bypassed an entire arm of Australia's legal system to follow his own agenda

Clive may live to regret tossing about insults. He has yet to declare his pecuniary interests and I wouldn't mind betting that a 'discovery' team has been commissioned by the Libs to track down Clive's business interests. It will be entertaining to watch the sh!t fight.

By the way, has it been confirmed yet that Murdoch's ex-wife was a Chinese spy? That's what Clive was asserting.

Quote:
Aspiring Prime Minister Clive Palmer threw out a bunch of accusations on the Today Show this morning, in a heated interview with Karl Stefanovic.

Palmer’s accusations grew more ludicrous by the second, as a bewildered Karl struggled to make sense of what the mining magnate business owner was actually trying to say. Palmer then set his sights on the television host, repeatedly telling Karl to ‘lift his game.’

The peak of the rant? When Palmer accused Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife Wendi Deng of being a ‘Chinese spy’ – because obviously. “She’s being spying on Rupert for years…read the truth about her!” Clive exclaimed. Yikes.

Palmer could end up becoming a national embarrassment and the punchline to a joke.  I expect him to do very badly in parliament.  I also expect him to resign after he gets bored of not being able to get his own way by bullying.

At least he may end up making the 2 majors have a good look at themselves.

Surely the cooler heads in both must be asking the question of how they are so on the nose that Australians are happily electing these sort of nut jobs over their candidates.

they would be the same people who's first choice was out of the running ... they'd probably be thinking 'lucky I put him second, or third' and so on
