What a surprise. Taxpayer dollars at work - one conservative on the panel constantly being disrespected, interrupted and hounded down, and another 90% left-wing crowd.

If Abbott refuses to participate on Q&A despite being invited numerous times, are you surprised? If you want balance on insiders, get Abbott to participate two or three times a year. Oh wait, can't do that - it would expose him to unscripted questions that he can't answer without saying "um" a lot.

Besides, you probably didn't see next week's Q&A panel - five prominent businesspeople. There's your balance.

And you obviously don't watch Insiders (where Bolt has appeared with disturbing frequency) or The Business (a right-leaning show due to the subject matter it covers).

Abbott vs 4 Lefties...  and a biased audience...oh yeah that'd be balanced...  think of all the fun he'd have and how fair that'd be  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Q&A 2013-Nov-04  Mon

Bravo, Peter Hitchens !

I liked him too until he revealled his "dangerous idea" and disclosed
the source of his mediocrity
.

He was quite good until he took the mask off, but then all true performers are.

Yes K, listening to PH, i got a sense of how you must have been repulsed by what he said....

PETER HITCHENS:......I have absolutely no shame in saying that I believe that the Christian religion was the greatest possession which the human race had, which it's now, in large parts of the world, rather busily throwing away.

PETER HITCHENS: The most dangerous idea in human history and philosophy remains the belief that Jesus Christ was the son of God and rose from the dead and that is the most dangerous idea you will ever encounter.

Rubbish, they'd do the same thing they did with Gillard when she was PM , he would be the only guest .... but Abbott can't have that, no one there to tell him what to say  Grin Grin Grin

Funny, I didn't mention him as a lefty, why did you assume I meant him?

You said there were two righties .... If you don't think Martin is a leftie, I hope you don't think either Pyne or Judith Sloan are  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Just pointing out that you obviously don't consider Martin a lefty either (your assumption was right though, that is who I meant).

I don't watch it for obvious reasons - mainly in that we don't get the ABC in England - but I would say that in all the time I watched it I thought Tony Jones gave out just as much to the ALP and Greens as he did the Liberals.

Were the audiences stacked?
Not sure they are to be fair.

But Tony Jones for me, I would rate up alongside David Dimbleby (who hosts the BBC's Q&A and is equally as unforgiving of both sides) as the best panel controllers around.

That's a fair point, and my issue isn't with Tony Jones, but with the audience stacking and panel stacking.

No wonder Abbott won't go on Q & A, with the audience stacked as it is.

Why wouldn't Gillard or any Labor frontbenchers (excepting for Albanese) go on the Bolt Report?

The Insiders that is presented by Barrie Cassidy and regularly features 2:1 lefties to conservatives?

so if you don't know which way Matin leans, why start a thread crying out at the imbalance? For all you know there were more righties than lefties ????

Ive said it before and I'll say it again, you are a bona fide idiot.

on almost every episode I've seen (and I try not to miss it) the audience has always been fairly evenly split .....

England.
You have an issue with that? Or are dual citizens not allowed to pick a sports team?

We had dual citizens like you back in WWI.

We had you detained for the duration of the war.

hmm a love-in was it? I did not see the entire show, so maybe I missed the love bits.

What I did notice though was that the panel basically consisted of a bunch of people who, arguably, have moved on from their hay day and now simply seek attention where ever it is afforded.

Did they offer anything provocative or thought provoking or considered? Not in the last half of program that I watched.

A perfect case in point was when the young girl form the audience asked the very clear question about the current generations lack of making protests - in effect she asked if it was learned behaviour or if they simply had it too comfortable to rock the boat. Not a single one of the four (apparently) esteemed panellists made any attempt to actually address what she said. They simply pushed their own agendas.

Germaine Greer went off on some tangent, no where near the actual question and, it appeared, had a lengthy moment of disconnect from her brain to her mouth. Sadly, she was once a good orator.

Peter Hitchen's made no attempt at an answer. He merely spent his time baiting the gay activist (don't know his name) on the panel and arrogantly suggesting that he "grew up" whereas all he really did was change teams.

The other two, well, the gay activist got caught up in the Hitchen's barbs, primarily to his own discredit and the other one appeared to simply tell the young woman how good she has it...

Simply put, what I saw was blatant disrespect and rudeness from these apparently once or currently revered minds.... None of them offered up much of use.

As to stacking the audience, I literally laughed when I read that.

I would suggest that those who truly believe that, simply watch the end of the program and take down the details and apply to be an audience member. Not too hard and then you can prove or disprove your theory once and for all.

This old ABC is biased chestnut is ridiculous and a furphy. Whilst it is demonstrable that some ABC faces are biased, that is not the entire ABC, in point of fact the follow on from the absurd ABC is bias and should be Shut Down, Privatised blah blah blah is akin to throwing out the baby with the bath water. The ABC simply shows both sides far more equitably than the privatised media sources many are so use to.

As to "paying" for it, well, private media gets paid for by you as well. Any product you purchase that pays for advertising in the tabloid garbage, you have paid for that as well.

Media standards need to be set up and applied to ALL forms of media. This idea of private vs public is just as much an attack on free speech as the idea of full and thorough Government regulation. I think the Government should regulate media ownership, and, given Australian media really does have a responsibility to the Australian public, then, that would be the best bench mark - Australian ownership. That is the system elsewhere after all.
