From the Al Jazeera article:

Quote:
Afghanistan's seat at the United Nations at the time was occupied by the anti-Taliban resistance, led by Burhanuddin Rabbani, the country's ousted president

Quote:
"They [al-Qaeda] were people from the time of Jihad, and Rabbani’s government brought them back into the country. The Taliban simply inherited them," Muttawakil said.

So just to be clear, Afghanistan's officially recognised government was led by the guy who invited bin Laden back to Afghanistan on a chartered flight. Yet the group that merely inherited bin Laden were the ones blamed for having bin Laden in the country.  Tongue

"the guys who inherited" him had the power to turn him over or to shelter him. They were the de facto rulers of the country. Bin Laden couldn't have stayed without their nod.

Bollocks.

You have shown only that they offered to put him on trial in Afghanistan, before a sharia court under the supervision of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

They never offered him to the US.  They considered asking Bin Laden to leave voluntarily. But never actually asked him.

Whether bin ladin handed him self him, America was hell bent on attacking Afghanistan.

They would of still attacked.

The point is, they tried to hand him over but Washington kept rejecting their offers!

Looks to me like they were damned if they did or damned if they didn't.  Like all bigots, your prejudices prevent you, like the US Government, acting sensibly!   Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy

Indeed. The US took the emotional response, not the smart response. The smart response would have been to get the taliban on side and work with them hunting down bin Laden and other key AQ figures. All the evidence indicates the taliban would have been more than willing to cooperate.

They attacked Afghanistan because the Talibs were hell-bent on defying the US demand to hand over the Al Qaeda big-shots.

Well, all the evidence actually shows that they did everything - short of actually cooperating.

They thought it was another day in the bazaar, endless haggling, endless 'ten for that you must be mad'.

As for 'emotional' reaction, you and the Talibs and the rest of the appeasers were/are mad to imagine that the American response to something like that would/could have been some quiet diplomacy and backroom deals.

Nobody would tolerate something like the September 11 attacks. It's one thing to attack US embassies in Africa, and and an entirely different thing to fly American passener planes into the heart of America.
To imagine that the US would have just absorb it and started negotiations with a bunch of atavistic bearded fvckers is lunacy.

What I've always found interesting is that the US upon several occasions before 11 September actually refused offers to hand over Usama bin Laden to them, from both the Afghani and Sudanese governments.

Bollocks

I don't imagine at all. I'm only saying it would be the smart response - not the expected response.

Muslims burn down embassies, newspaper offices and behead and blow up innocents for a lot less.

SO please, no smug lectures by Muslims about smart behaviour.
