The Guardian is now reporting it too:

Quote:
Revealed: Australian spy agency offered to share data about ordinary citizens

• Secret 5-Eyes document shows surveillance partners discussing what information they can pool about their citizens

• DSD indicated it could provide material without some privacy restraints imposed by other countries such as Canada

Medical, legal or religious information 'not automatically limited'

• Concern that intelligence agency could be 'operating outside its legal mandate'

The front page of the Australian today -
They did report it.

Quote:
INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES FEAR REVELATIONS ABOUT SPYING ON CHINA AND OUR OWN CITIZENS

NEW revelations from the stockpile of documents stolen by US security contractor Edward Snowden are expected to include evidence of Australian espionage against China and other Asian neighbours and expose the scale of surveillance by Australian agencies against their own citizens.

The Abbott government is bracing for a new series of disclosures about Australian intelligence activity, which is likely to include fresh details on Indonesian spying that will further test the relationship with Jakarta.

Snowden, a former US National Security Agency contractor, is also believed to have extensive material involving Australian intelligence efforts directed at China, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Thailand and The Philippines, as well as various South Pacific nations.

One of the most controversial matters will be the disclosure of a much wider surveillance and listening program within Australia than previously known.

It is believed that all Australian activities likely to be revealed will be legal, with senior figures confident that no Australian intelligence agency has broken any Australian laws.

However, Australia has fewer restrictions on domestic spying than the US and has undertaken targeted but extensive surveillance, most related to terrorism threats. Senior figures in the US and Australia believe that the Snowden leaks are the single most damaging episode to hit the Western intelligence effort since World War II.

They didn't mention invading peoples private medical records.

There are other disquieting details in the minutes of this spooks’ convention. The parties all agreed that as a result of electronic spying breakthroughs they appear to be now collecting “medical, legal and religious, or restricted business information, which may be regarded as an intrusion of privacy (my italics)”. But there is no “may” about it – obtaining details of personal medical history counts as an invasion of privacy under every human rights treaty, whilst theft of professionally privileged legal advice is contrary to the common law. These minutes are further evidence we are slipping into an Orwellian world where the state can scoop up any electronic communication, and in which DSD thinks it can lawfully tittle-tattle on Australians to foreign agencies and is even considering disclosure to “non-intelligence agencies” – police, professional associations, employers and perhaps even to newspapers.

Why do spy agencies want to know the medical information of citizens?

Government rallies behind spy agencies - claims metadata sent to overseas networks rejected by senior sources
5 HOURS AGODECEMBER 02, 2013 6:59PM

...

ASIO Headquarters being built in Canberra - Aerials photographs of Canberra ACT Source: News Limited
THE Government today swung behind Australia's security network to rebuff a fresh round of leaks accused our spies of sending "metadata" information on ordinary citizens to intelligence agencies overseas.
Senior source dismissed as "wrong'' the allegations, carried by the Guardian website after leaks by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, and insisted no laws had been broken.
It was not new that security agencies such as ASIO collected the metadata but there was no evidence they did it illegally
or sent it overseas to the so-called Five Eyes intelligence partners - New Zealand, Britain, Canada and the US - in 2008 as the leaks suggested.
And the Government rallied behind the intelligence agencies at a time when it's operations have been opened to unprecedented public scrutiny and comment caused by the leaking of US secrets.
Australia's spy networks have helped jail more than 40 terrorists over the past decade - 23 of them in Australia in the past four years - and thwarted "a number of mass casualty attacks''.
"Metadata'' is information about communications which does not reveal the content of those communications. This includes ISP identifiers, the time and date of emails and telephone calls, and the people who received the calls and emails.
But the contents of the calls - not even the material in the subject line - is revealed without a specific warrant.
The material collected has been likened to the address on the envelope, the name of the recipient, and the details in the post mar, but not the letter itself.
Foreign intelligence networks are unlikely to be interested in the metadata, but would be sent any intelligence refined from the information.
Attorney-General George Brandis today argued there had been no illegal activity and dismissed the Guardian reports.
He told the Senate the document leaked by "traitor'' Edward Snowden was unverified. The Government would continue the practice of not commenting on intelligence matters.
"I also note that the unverified document is described as a draft document which, contrary to the reports, does not report or record any activity by any Australian agency,'' said Senator Brandis.
He referred to the oversight of intelligence operations by ministers and the Parliament, and praised the work of our spy networks in stopping terrorist attacks.
"The purpose of all of Australia's intelligence activity and the co-operation of its intelligence agencies is to serve Australia's national interests and protect Australian citizens,'' said Senator Brandis.
"And can I by way of illustration point out Australian authorities have disrupted terrorist planning in Australia and thwarted a number of mass casualty attacks as a result of there activities, 23 people have been convicted on terrorist offences in Australia in the last four years.
"Australia's intelligence has also helped to prevent four attacks in South East Asia in the last decade and contributed to the arrest within South East Asia of over 20 terrorists.
"The Government is confident that the Australian intelligence agencies will act in accordance with the law and always in the service of the national interest."

I don't care what you call them.
They may have done some good work but it doesn't explain
snooping medical information.

Online medical information is only available to hospitals in life threatening situations using encryption.
The medical records encryption decoding  information & access must have
been given away by the medical authorities for the security services to read.

Who is responsible for doing so & not telling us?

We need questions in parliament.

Pine Gap is still spying under the Abbott Regime.

Abbott supports spying on our neighbours and Abbott supports spying on Australians.

Abbott, stop spying.

Nobody's mentioned spying on Australians that I have seen. Go hug a tree, or better yet, chain yourself to it! You guys seem to be good at that, so stick to what you're good at and leave this adult stuff to the adults.

Just because you have your head up your rear end doesn't count for anything.

Abbott supports Pine Gap and Pine Gap spies on everything and everyone.

Abbott must stop supporting spying on Australians and demand the closure of Pine Gap and kick out the yanks off Australian soil.

Yes, much better that our country collectively sticks its head in the sand, right? Gawd, you're a fool. Every PM - Labor and Liberal for decades has supported Pine Gap. Who knows how many terrorist acts have been prevented here by using intel obtained through Pine Gap? I think we'll find that the facility does more good than bad for us all.

Sounds like the ABC is waiting for Tony to get things back on track before releasing another tranche of confidential documents. If that does happen, Tony needs to leave his good-guy persona at the door and deal harshly with the ABC. In my opinion, he should've already by sacking the Managing Director.

Firstly, I doubt the PM has the right to dismiss the MD of the ABC.

What would he sack him for - reporting the truth?

For illegal possession and publishing of classified material, which is, as it happens, an offence under Commonwealth law and a penalty which carries with it a prison term.

Ex Dame Pansi wrote on Dec 2nd, 2013 at 8:36am:

the guardian and the ABC are not picking what they are doing is outrageous

They are reporting the news cods, as is The Australian Murdoch right wing press.

Australia can't complain when the story comes out. If we act like rsoles, don't complain when we're treated like like rsoles and the world finds out about it.

It is the job of the media to report the news, no matter how distasteful it is, it's their obligation.

Spot on, Pansi. If the news embarrasses politicians or government, that's tough.

American humorist Finley Peter Dunne once said it was the job of the media to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable". Wise man.
