What some of you are missing is that both Labor and Libs have been briefed by ASIO into the details of this case and in the senate, Labor voted AGAINST forcing Brandis to answer questions.  So what does that tell you?  Labor, which has scarcely voted with the govt since losing office, has sided with the govt on an issue that could only embarrass the govt - not Labor.

Clearly they know something that the rest of us do not.

I do find it disturbing and amusing that Labor criticises spying on timor but has no problem with spying by itself on Indonesia.

Why did they stop an Australian leaving today, a witness who was to give evidence against the Government position concerning the East Timor agreement?  Sheer coincidence was it?  Brandis made no reference to that.

Were you at the ASIO meeting ?

Of course not.  But, while Brandis can, without public challenge, rabbit on about national interest needing protection as a justification for raiding the law office of the lawyer representing East Timor, it is another thing altogether why they prevented an Australian citizen's right to freely come and go, out and in to the Country.

Habeas Corpus.

So your only guessing !   Wink

No I am not.  I saw Brandis address The Senate and he made zero reference to the fact that this witness,  an Australian citizen with the highest security clearance, was prevented from leaving the Country.

There are two separate issues:

1.  The raids on the legal office and  home, and
2.  Preventing that witness leaving the Country.

Star witness has passport cancelled

Mr Collaery says a star witness who ASIO questioned last night was "not some disaffected spy" but the former director of all technical operations at ASIS.

He says the former ASIS operator decided to blow the whistle after learning Mr Downer had become an adviser to Woodside Petroleum in his years after politics.
Video: Former spy's lawyer accuses Government of intimidation (ABC News)

In a statement to the ABC, Mr Downer says the allegations are old and he will not comment on matters regarding national security.

The whistleblower's affidavit is understood to refer to the alleged 2004 bugging operation as "immoral and wrong" because it served not the national interest, but the interests of big oil and gas.

Mr Collaery says ASIS's alleged spying amounts to "insider trading".

"If this had happened in Bridge Street, Collins Street, Wall Street, people would go to jail," he told Lateline.

Mr Collaery has accused the Government and ASIO of being "crass" by "muzzling the oral evidence of the prime witness".

"What do you think the tribunal [at The Hague] is going to think of it?" he told Lateline.

And who got a good job after all this happened?

Quote:
Woodside Petroleum, which wanted to exploit the field, was working hand in glove with the Australian government and senior ministers to score the best possible deal.

Mr Collaery says the details in the allegations have not been made public until now.

"The director-general of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service and his deputy instructed a team of ASIS technicians to travel to East Timor in an elaborate plan, using Australian aid programs relating to the renovation and construction of the cabinet offices in Dili, East Timor, to insert listening devices into the wall, of walls to be constructed under an Australian aid program," he told the ABC.

Have you ever seen an admission of guilt quite like this?

The ex ASIO bloke that should be flying to the Hague to give evidence has been arrested.

News just in....they've cancelled his passport, so he can't go and give evidence.

I hope the Hague courts will set up a video link so he can give evidence.

It's wrong for a wealthy nation to steal from its poor neighbour, just so wrong!

I hope East Timor win the case, in spite of Abbott sabotaging the evidence.

What is of greater importance is the separation of powers.
Lawyers are supposed to have privileged communication with clients
& the law should be separated from Govt.

ASIO must have acted illegally.

I hope we get a high court ruling on this case.

A hell of assumptions. You clowns wouldn't know someone was upya till they pulled out and the wind rushed in   Wink Wink

You must be retarded if you see nothing wrong with what has happened.

Ah... East Timor... an indonesian-conquered lawless hell-hole one day and a safe democratic haven the next.  To date, I don't recall any thanks for the liberation, the welfare and the lives lost getting them their country back.

Yeah right. And Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs is a true story.  Grow up.  Downer and his corporate cronies cheated one of the worlds poorest nations of $40 billion and not only are you not sorry, you expect gratitude.   Go jump in the lake

I bet Downer wiggles his way out of this one.

Nothing happened after the wheat scandal.
There were no witnesses.

Like the lawyer said

Australia never used to be like this

Another thing he said is that 'this won't be the end of it'

Fascist Germany's got nothing on Abbott's Australia.

Can Tony give us just one day when he doesn't cause a domestic or international sh1t storm.

I want my old Australia back, the one where we had some form of decency.

WHAT THE...????

WE all know you are stupid but I think you just set new levels for stupidity.  Perhaps when Greens supporters are dragged away by the secret police in the dead of night and Asians are sent to death camps you might have a point. Up until then you just sound like you are in need of a brain transplant.  Even SOB's brain would be an improvement!

Perhaps when Greens supporters are dragged away by the secret police

He got dragged away by ASIO.

Asians are sent to death camps

sent to rape camps in Nauru and PNG

Were getting there, just one little toothbrush mustache away.

Downer is on the board of directors, he would be doing deals with his Lib mates and the company.

Downer is paid as an advisor to a Woodside Lobbyist.

That's a nice piece of the pie - regular money & all legal.   Wink
