A Royal Commission of Inquiry into deaths and injuries linked to the Rudd government's home insulation scheme will begin on Monday in Brisbane.
Four young men died while working on the roll-out of the so-called "pink batts" scheme set up in 2009.

Three of the men were Queenslanders Matthew Fuller, Rueben Barnes, Mitchell Sweeney and the fourth New South Welshman Marcus Wilson.

Their families believe the $2.8 billion program - implemented by then-prime minister Kevin Rudd to inject money into the economy during the global financial crisis - was rushed and lacked adequate safety standards.

The inquiry will also investigate the affect the program had on the reputation and profits of long-standing home insulation businesses.

Heading the Royal Commission is barrister and commercial dispute resolution practitioner Ian Hanger, QC.

Mr Hange has until June 30 next year to provide a report of his findings and recommendations.

Where does it say in the article that Labor fear the inquiry dear? I think you mean Abbott fears being exposed by more women for bashing or indecently assaulting them hey? Sweet cheeks?

Judicial Inquiry into pink batts scheme
27 Oct, 2013 01:14 PM Print Increase Text Size Decrease Text Size Comments

Treasurer Joe Hockey has added to calls for a judicial inquiry into the home insulation fiasco to include witnesses from the senior ranks of the first Rudd Government, including Kevin Rudd himself.

Mr Hockey said on Sunday that no one should be immune from giving evidence about the so-called pink batts scheme in which four young men died.

"I don't think anyone should be excluded from providing full and frank and honest evidence in front of a judicial inquiry," he said.

According to reports, the draft terms of reference for the inquiry call for a full explanation of the then government's decisions about the $2.8 billion program, and if any steps could have been taken to avoid the deaths of four young insulation installers.

Mitchell Sweeney, Marcus Wilson, Matthew Fuller and Rueben Barnes died between 2009 and 2010 while working on jobs funded by the capital spending program at the height of the global financial crisis.

"The judicial commission is to be conducted in such a manner as to enable the families of the deceased tradesmen and all others who have suffered loss and damage (to get) the maximum transparency and access to information disclosed by the evidence before it," the terms of reference say.

The ten terms of reference include:

- The process and basis of government decisions while establishing the program, including risk assessment and risk management;

- Whether the death of the four men could have been avoided;

- What if any advice or undertakings given by the government to the industry were inaccurate or deficient, and;

- What steps the government should have taken to avoid the tragedies.

If Mr Rudd is called it is almost certain that his then environment minister Peter Garrett will also be called to give evidence and former senator Mark Arbib who was parliamentary secretary to the minister and worked on designing and delivering the program.

it could bring some answers to the families..concerned... why is that not important to the left????

For the second time THIS THREAD, you've HAD the answers.

MORE THAN ONCE!

Don't like the answers.

smacking sad. That's YOUR problem, no-one else's.

Accept the ref's decision, suck it down, and STFU.

You lot simply make yourselves look like the pathetic grubs you are
in persisting with this obviously vindictive charade.

There is no panic, as there never should be whenever a Royal Commission is commenced.  The outcome is known now:

1.  Rudd/Garret failed in some way or other.
2.  *The LNP don't care what 2 is, all they want is 1.*
3.  *The LNP don't care what 3 is, all they want is 1.*
4.  *The LNP don't care what 4 is, all they want is 1.*
5.  *The LNP don't care what 5 is, all they want is 1.*
6.  *The LNP don't care what 6 is, all they want is 1.*
7.  *The LNP don't care what 7 is, all they want is 1.*
8.  *The LNP don't care what 8 is, all they want is 1.*
9.   Oh, and by the way, it seems four blokes died, did they?  Well, we think they did but we are not being paid to worry too much about that.  Rudd/Garret are arseholes.

*We did good, hey Phoney, and here's me bill.*

The whole home insulation beat up is just a furphy created by the then opposition. Quite successfully too and help by a government without the nous to defend itself.

Tragic as it is that four workers were killed, the rate of workers killed per installation was no different under the previous government. the only difference being less fatalities because there were less installations.

2000 to 2008 there were about 67 - 70000 houses insulated per year. An average of 80 fires per year resulted. During the rollout in the program, 210 fires resulted from 1.25 million installs.

I doubt that the ALP will be shaking in their boots since they can reasonably show that safety standards actually improved. Too stupid to show while in government but evidence in a royal commission is a different animal.

This is all fine.  But when are we gong to get a royal commission into the war on Iraq?  I'm sure those families would like to understand why their kids lost their lives.

Oh wait never mind, our "intelligence", mr Howard, asserted it was due to wmds.

Seems the only promise Abbott can actually keep is to organise a political witch hunt.

Says a lot about the mans priorities for the country.

The ALP deciding to open up an insulation business on the side was always going to end in tears, almost everyone on planet earth could have told them that but listening to reason has never been their strong point   Grin
