As always you miss the point.  If as Abbott insists now, drawing attention to this matter only encourages people smugglers, then why was Abbott deliberately and constantly drawing attention to it  while he was in opposition.  Its clear now Abbott knew that all the attention he was drawing to people smugglers was making the problem much worse for the last govt and all so he could accuse the Rudd govt for not fixing the problem.  A betrayal of the Aust people.  And most particularly a betrayal of you Cod, whose main reason for voting for Abbott was probably so that he would stop these poor desperate people from finding peace and refuge in this country.  You need to answer that since that's the topic of this thread.

You make a good point Mr Crow.....Tony Abbott made a lot of noise about "illegals" in Opposition and by his own reasoning gave the people smugglers a narrative that "the Australian Government had lost control of its borders".....Now we are being treated like mushrooms!!!

Yes or no. Don't wait for the translation, yes or no.  We are prepared to wait till hell freezes over, yes or no.

As someone who worked in the media for 25 years, I know this:

News happens when it happens. It doesn't occur on a weekly basis. When it does happen a government has a responsibility to tell the voters what's going on.

Waiting for a once a week press conference isn't good enough. It's treating voters with contempt.

That is beside the point of this Thread which absolutely nails the utter political hypocrisy of Abbot.  I really hope we can all keep it centered exactly there.

the really funny thing is that for over a year before the election, most the monkeys currently praising Abbott for his media ban, were calling Gillard a socialist/ communist.

Yes but John,  it looks like Abbott deliberately undermined the efforts of the last govt to deal with the people smuggling issue just so he and the conalition could go into the election claiming that the govt failed to stop the boats and Armpit and cods need to explain how they can possibly condone that behaviour.

There is no argument that Tony Abbott has shown himself to be the consummate hypocrite, more evidently so since taking over the prime ministership. I’ve stumbled across a wonderful example of his hypocrisy, which has the added bonus of producing further evidence of his stupidity.

Do you remember this from earlier last year?

Tony Abbott demands Julia Gillard explain WA asylum seeker boat arrival.

Tony Abbott is seeking an urgent briefing from the Prime Minister on how a boat of suspected asylum seekers last week managed to reach the Australian mainland for the first time in five years.

The Opposition Leader has written to Ms Gillard requesting an official explanation about the incident.

He writes, “the Coalition is gravely concerned over the extent to which the capacity of government agencies to undertake security checks on arrivals have been undermined and the massive consequent cost blowouts running at more than $5 billion since the last election.”Moreover, Minister O’Connor has failed to satisfactorily explain why he plans to spend more than $100,000 transferring these mainland boat arrivals by air to Christmas Island for health checks and other procedures that should have been done in facilities where they are already accommodated.”

Mr Abbott also accused Julia Gillard of running a $100,000 taxi service for the 66 Sri Lankans – who landed in Geraldton, Western Australia, on Monday – amid plans to fly them to Christmas Island.

Now listen to the same bloke today:

Australia PM Tony Abbott defends asylum policy ‘closed book’

Australian PM Tony Abbott has defended what critics have described as government secrecy over asylum policy.

Officials have in recent days refused to comment on reports that Australian naval forces have turned back at least one boat to Indonesia.

Asylum-seeker accounts have also alleged mistreatment by navy personnel.

Mr Abbott, who promised a tough line on the asylum issue when he took office, said restricting information flow boosted operational enforcement.

“I’d rather be criticised for being a bit of a closed book on this issue and actually stop the boats,” he told local media.

“The point is not to provide sport for public discussion. The point is to stop the boats.

“I’m pleased to say it is now several weeks since we’ve had a boat, and the less we talk about operational details on the water, the better when it comes to stopping the boats.”

All of a sudden ‘keeping quiet’ stops the boats.

I’m sorry, but I can’t help myself, I need to swear . . . Oh for f^%k’s sake.

so you think its wise to ADVISE the people smugglers in advance like labor did??....OK.. some of us dont agree with that of course.

btw for a long time any reporting whilst labs were in was on the almost back page...........it never reached the front page... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I have NO IDEA why!

Outstanding catch Mr Crow!

It just shows how weak our media is for not jumping on Abbott as soon as he opened his mouth. They should be hammering him day and night over why he went out of his way to actively encourage people smuggling while in opposition.

LOL

No one was trying to STOP boats then, were they?

And he highlighted what happens when the wrong (depending on your stance) policies are implemented.

Must mean the ALP and Greens are currently actively encouraging people smuggling by asking for more information.
