Why Can't You Turn The Wheel Around.

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel halted again

Date
    January 24, 2014

The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel has again been forced to close due to technical problems.   Roll Eyes

The ride closed about 11am today after experiencing a "software problem".

A spokeswoman said she expected it to be turning again by this afternoon.

"They are investigating as we speak," she said.

The spokeswoman said the problem was not related to the "pods" and that this morning's glitch did not pose a safety threat to passengers.

"People were riding as normal this morning. There were no issues relating to people on the wheel itself," she said.

Staff at the Docklands ride are telling customers the closure is due to "windy conditions".      Cry

Cheltenham woman Jacinta Thornton brought her niece and nephew from Colac to ride the wheel, but was told by staff that weather conditions had forced it to close.

Ms Thornton said it was the "one ride" Mitch, 10, and Zoe, 8, wanted to go on.

"We came in especially to ride the wheel," she said.

Andrew Pidgeon and his daughter Chloe, 6, flew from Adelaide to ride the Wheel.

"It's a bit disappointing." Mr Pidgeon said. "We head back tomorrow."

"We've been over here a few times and seen it stationary."      Sad

A Melbourne Star Observation Wheel spokeswoman apologised for the closure.

"Melbourne Star’s operations have been temporarily suspended due to a software problem," the spokeswoman said.

"Our Technical Services team are undertaking a comprehensive investigation to identify and correct the issue and we are expecting to resume operations later today.

"Melbourne Star is very sorry for any inconvenience caused to guests."

The wheel reopened to the public on December 23.

It initially opened in 2008 but closed weeks later due to faults with the original design that required it to be partially rebuilt.

The cracks happened after the heatwave we had in 2009. Then just a few months after it re openned in 2013 we had an even worse heatwave last week... I was waiting for the announcement that they would have to pull it down again

They should pull it down and sell it for scrap metal before someone is killed on it.
