UN to hold inqury
Jan 25th, 2014 at 7:47am

The UN Refugee Agency says it is trying to "corroborate" the individual accounts of asylum seekers who claim to have been abused by the Australian Navy as their boat was turned back to Indonesia.

Footage obtained by ABC News shows asylum seekers with severe burns to their hands, but it is impossible to verify how they received them.

Some of the asylum seekers who were turned back to Indonesia say they were abused and suffered burns after being forced to touch the boat's engine.

Indonesian police have indicated they do not have the power to investigate the allegations, and they want the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to investigate.

"UNHCR has heard serious allegations of boats carrying potential asylum seekers being pushed back from Australia to Indonesia and of mistreatment during the process," a refugee agency spokeswoman in Jakarta told AFP.

"We are corroborating these individual accounts. If confirmed, we hope that the Australian authorities will conduct a swift investigation into these allegations."

A UN spokeswoman told the ABC that its inquiries did not qualify as an investigation, but the refugee agency was "asking additional questions to corroborate the facts".

"These are serious allegations and we need to be fairly sure before taking further action," she said.

Indonesian police say so far the only witnesses are the asylum seekers.

National Police spokesman Ronny Sompie says it cannot be determined whether the alleged mistreatment happened inside Indonesian waters.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has emphatically rejected the asylum seekers' claims.

The Federal Government has said it is willing to provide any documents and videos it has in order to refute the accusations.

The UNHCR has previously warned that turning boats back to Indonesia may be in breach of international law.

Maybe not, but the Australian people might be interested if they find that the asylum seekers claims are correct. It will certainly be a further slur against our government and defense forces.

Not everyone wants to see asylum seekers mistreated.

Our government and its agencies should not be above scrutiny.....ever.

Why does Tony Abbott think that abusing and demoralising asylum seekers is an appropriate way for a leader to behave?
If he doesn't want Australia to be part of the refugee convention all he has to do is tear it up..Abbott should at least have the courage to be honest.

I don't think the UNHRC would be particularly interested in our internal affairs, but human rights issues are an entirely different ball game.

Well you wouldn't know then, would you?

I was an active member of Amnesty International for many years (have since resigned) and through them I was instrumental in seeking justice for prisoners held in foreign countries and political prisoners, Aung San Suu Kui being one such person.

I lobbied long and hard to save Van Nguyens life and I have constantly lobbied for the others to be brought home via the prison exchange program.

I constantly hounded the then premier of WA for Holly Deane-johns who was held in a Thai prison for many years, a success story where she was eventually brought back to WA to serve the remainder of her sentence.

You shouldn't let your hatred of all things left of centre blur your judgement cods. Take the blinkers off and you'll get a better view of the world around you.

I will fight for human rights until the day I die and I'll challenge anyone who denies my right to do that Smiley

sorry pansi.. but it s very plain you are not fighting for our fighting men.. when ABbott is in charge..

its very obvious in fact..your sense of loathing for anything right is hardly blurring your judgement is it?

you may have had your moment in the past havent we all... I have done my share thats for sure.. but my instincts dont alter depending  on whos in govt..

when it comes to taking blinkers off...how about we look at ourselves before we give others directions on that score.. Cheesy Cheesy

First we get navy personnel posting this on facebook:

Quote:
"More Asylum boaties sank in a boat trying to get here to jump on Centrelink and get free government housing,"

I'm about to head out today to deal with these f------s.

and then, lo and behold, we find a group of "these f------" with burn marks and claims of abuse.

yes, the navy is squeaky clean and should absolutely always be believed at face value, and no sort of inquiry is ever needed.  Tongue Tongue
