Cods, you did well until you couldn't help yourself and had to include a lefty smear.

What the hell is the big deal if a post doesn't appear immediately?  If its a popular thread, there will soon be more posts 'bumping' it.  If its not, it probably doesnt matter much anyway.

There is nothing more annoying than having to wade thru the many 'bumps' of Herbert and Aussie to get to the next REAL post.

Okay.  We were asked to do that by freediver, but seeing as how it inconveniences you (Heaven forbid,) I'll not bother anymore, and in doing so, the problem will be ignored and left unattended, unresolved.

No worries.....I'll go and vote 'No" to support your cause and you can have the job of taking it up with freediver, because his position always is that if you do not bring a problem to him with proof of more than anecdotal kind...he can't do much to fix it with the people who own the server he uses.

So, Dude, over to you.  You now have the baton.

Good luck.

I doubt you yet have understood that we were doing exactly what the owner of this site wanted us to do.  But......your problem now.

Good luck.  Hope you get it fixed.

Thanks for the suggestion spot. I'm surprised Aussie didn't think of the German solution.

I have a modest and humbly made request for all Members.  If ever a page does not flip, would you mind sending a link of that Thread to Cliff48 so he can deal with it.

I wash my hands of the matter.

Cheers!

Please do:)

And I will ignore it. as bumping just fills the chat page and achieves nothing.   If any of you had knowledge of database (which is where the forum content is held), bumping achieves nothing.  It is to do with buffering on the server side, and its the server that is the problem.

I have watched as a post i made was posted immediately, and on other occasions, within a few minutes, and sometimes an hour or 2 later.  Wow, have I ever said anything that HAD TO BE POSTED INSTANTLY?????  Aussie thinks his posts are so important that the slightest delay is totally unacceptable.

Please Aussie, show me a single post that was a life changing statement that everyone needed to know IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

When I return tomorrow and see pages filled with "bump", "#",................ crap, it just reminds me I am dealing with children who need instant gratification from seeing their own words in print ....   and a page of bump and grind to make it instant.

Aussie, have a great day ...  try not to let little annoyances get you down.

Contrary to what cliff posted, bumping does work, for this particular problem. Another key symptom is that after you make a post, you get automatically redirected to a post above yours. Your post number does not match the number on the end of the URL. This happens after every post, not just the ones that span a page.

This forum does not use a database. It is flat file based.

I would say a bigger endemic forum problem is the absolutely terrible and limited search function.

Use google.. the lack of consistent justice is the problem: anarchy rules!

FD, I refer you to http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1391633272/435

where Herbert made 7 'bump' posts over 1 or 2 minutes for no result, but a post by someone else just 7 minutes later resolved the problem.

Similarly,  http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1391633272/450
where Aussie made 7 'bump posts over 2 minutes for no result and the problem was resolved by a post just 12 minutes later.

I'm not suggesting that 'bumping' doesn't work, but its apparent that rapid-fire bumps aren't a solution either.  All they achieve is filling a page with non-posts.

I have noticed in the past that often the problem will clear itself after a small amount of time.

I would suggest that if bumping is to be encouraged it should be restricted to, say, 1 bump every 10=15 minutes or so.

For some reason Aussie appears to have taken my  comments on this situation as a personal attack.  No attack was intended, I was simply stating my 2 penny's worth.

If you are happy to have the forum littered with countless bumps and grinds - its your choice and I am sorry I even mentioned it.

I disagree.  YABB's own documentation states that it uses a FLAT FILE DATABASE,

I don't know why people are so impatient. Eventually someone will post in the thread and the page will turn over.

There's nothing more irritating than seeing empty spaces throughout the threads.

Maybe the problem requires a more expensive server and if that's the case - maybe Ozpolitic should charge a $5 joining fee. That way FD could get the best that money can buy. There's a huge volume of traffic passing through and that doesn't come for free.
