Thanks for your advice cliff.

The problem will not "clear itself" after some time. Flat file "databases" do not take time to resolve things the way regular databases do. It is just a heap of files in a folder. The problem will only resolve itself after the correct number of bumps, or posts. You can tell how many are needed by the difference between your post number and the URL number you get redirected to.

I assume you get your extensive 'knowledge' from the yabb support forum.   I have tried to access it but it seems to be non existent at the moment.  If you have a link that supports your claims I would be very interested.  In my many years of IT experience, your statements just doesn't add up.

If YABB Support accept that there is a bug in their software I can understand.  But otherwise, your statements make no sense.

All databases are just a collection of files in a folder.  Whether they are Flat, Relational, Hierarchical, Network, .. whatever, is unimportant.  Access to these files uses the exact same  bios access techniques.  Where do you get the idea that database access is different if its not a Flat File?

I am sorry, but unless this is a reported bug within YABB, your explanation makes no sense.

I have witnessed the 'problem' correcting itself, and I have witnessed multiple bumps having no effect.

I would seriously like to see any documentation that supports your claims.

Contrary to what cliff posted, bumping does work, for this particular problem. Another key symptom is that after you make a post, you get automatically redirected to a post above yours. Your post number does not match the number on the end of the URL. This happens after every post, not just the ones that span a page.

FD, I refer you to http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1391633272/435

where Herbert made 7 'bump' posts over 1 or 2 minutes for no result, but a post by someone else just 7 minutes later resolved the problem.

Similarly,  http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1391633272/450
where Aussie made 7 'bump posts over 2 minutes for no result and the problem was resolved by a post just 12 minutes later.

I'm not suggesting that 'bumping' doesn't work, but its apparent that rapid-fire bumps aren't a solution either.  All they achieve is filling a page with non-posts.

I have noticed in the past that often the problem will clear itself after a small amount of time.

I would suggest that if bumping is to be encouraged it should be restricted to, say, 1 bump every 10=15 minutes or so.

For some reason Aussie appears to have taken my  comments on this situation as a personal attack.  No attack was intended, I was simply stating my 2 penny's worth.

If you are happy to have the forum littered with countless bumps and grinds - its your choice and I am sorry I even mentioned it.

Quote:
This forum does not use a database. It is flat file based.

I disagree.  YABB's own documentation states that it uses a FLAT FILE DATABASE,

You can hardly blame me for that given you singled me (and one other) out for specific mention even though many Members who are aware of the problem and of what freediver asked of us, have done exactly what I and that other have done.

My poor little paranoid Aussie ....   again I state ...   I DID NOT ATTACK YOU.  However if you insist on accusing me:

Apart from Herbert, others don't make 7 posts in 1 or 2 minutes to just spam the thread.

Quote:
Further, as you have now been told, it is not a 'time' issue.....it is a 'number of posts' issue before an effected page will flip.

Experience has disproved this claim.

Quote:
As I posted in another Thread, this is a discussion/debate Forum which needs to move in real time, and not be like a game of Chess played by two blokes living on opposite sides of the Globe mailing their moves, one at a time, to each other.

... and filling the thread with meaningless bumps and  grinds helps the exchange experience?

Quote:
Yeas mantra, a better, bigger more efficient server is the obvious answer and I have discussed that very issue with freediver.

About the only thing we agree upon, I made the same suggestion.

Mr 48................I'm not about to bother explaining it any further to you as you seem to claim to know more about the software which runs this Forum than the bloke who owns it and has run it with yabb (or whatever the correct letters are) for many, many years.

I do hope you'll forgive if I doffs me lid to him on this matter rather than your good self who has been here about a nano-second in comparison.

I did what freediver asked of me.

Now, leave me out of your joust.

No-one told me. I saw it for myself. You can see it for yourself too, if you open your eyes. Your own evidence based on what you have seen backs up what I am saying. You just don't seem to realise it yet, for some reason. I have given you enough information to verify what I say for yourself.

It is not a reported bug within YaBB because the problem is not with YaBB.

No ... I have not witnessed what you say but I will watch it closely to see if the pattern resembles your claims.

Since you have demonstrated you have no clue of how a database works on the net and admit that YABB do not have a support issue on this problem, your 'solution' at this point just seems to clutter the threads with little worthwhile result.

Best of luck in the future to actually solving the problem rather than giving idiots an excuse to spam the board.

I say, Elde Fruit, would you mind giving up on the personal abuse?  I am neither 'little,' nor 'paranoid,' and I am not seeking your patronage.

Leave me out of this, please.
