Where did they go? Well, there was a 4" thick carpet of dust covering several square miles of lower Manhattan. That dust would have been a mixture of concrete, drywall, glass and other debris including body parts.
What could have pulverized those buildings so completely?

Physicists have modelled what would have happened and what we saw was pretty close to the model.
