There is a world of difference between the situations faced by farmers and car manufacturing workers. First of all, farmers are essential to the economy - they feed us, dress us, etc. Without an agricultural sector that is strong, we'd be importing just about everything. As for car manufacturing, we can get by without a new car in most circumstances (our current car will suffice) and car manufacturing isn't essential to the wellbeing and prosperity of this country. Farmers don't need handouts - they're receiving interest free and low interest loans that will be paid back, so it's not a case of throwing good money after bad. But I expect you to pathetically deny and/or ignore all of what I just said simply because you don't like Abbott or Hockey or Joyce.

I said Brainwashed North Korean Automaton and right on queue Armpit sticks his hand up.  And despite what he sees before his very eyes Armpit repeats the mantra he's been taught to recite since childhood.  "farmers are essential to the economy - they feed us, dress us, etc. Without [them] ... we'd be importing just about everything" You poor fool.  Farmers don't feed us and dress us. They feed and dress the highest bidder from what ever country that will pay their price.  If this were a socialist society then what you're saying would be true but its not. Farmers compete in a private enterprise market and if they can get $1 a kilo for their lamb from Aust buyers but $2 a kilo from Russian buyers they will take the $2 and couldn't give a damn that you're Australian or that your tax $$$ gave them a lifeline when their farms were on the brink of collapse.  And we do already import just about everything from overseas.  And guess what, because farmers from other countries would rather sell their produce to us for the higher prices we pay then to their own countrymen who supported them with handouts and subsidies when they needed it.  Don't you get it? Farmers use the socialist "we" when it suites them.

So lets say we go ahead anyway and support these farmers with handouts and what happens, tomorrow they sell their farms (that we paid to spruce up for them) to some Chinese conglomerate and despite what any other poor fool can see right under his nose you will still continue reciting your mantra; "But farmers give us food security", "We got to help them cause farmers are good for the country". WAKE UP!!! Someone took your brain. You got to go get it back and do some thinking for yourself. And do it quick cause the rest of us can't afford to carry you much longer.  The society you knew is falling apart and yet you keep voting in this deceitful system for the same old tricksters and liars. Quick!!! take the red pill before its too late.

No,  isn't. You're just clearly biased. Abbott is 100% right to not offer long-term assistance. People can become too reliant on it and not prepare themselves for tough times only to be disappointed when they get less than expected assistance. By all means, help them in the short term so they don't have to sell up and move out, but once they're back on their feet, further assistance is just a waste of taxpayer funds.

And you're not biased?  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Abbott shouldn't rule anything out ... if the farmers are still in drought in 2 yrs time is he just going to let them all go belly up?

You didn't even read the article did you, just the title? He never said he would not help out over a longer term, he only said he wouldn't be providing subsidies, which are a long-term proposition. He's right too, because no country has ever subsidised its way out of its problems because it only serves to isolate that country and damage its industry. He said he wants to help them get back on their feet and get to a point where they can rebuild and get to a point where they no longer need that assistance.

Cop out mate! There is a lot in that post you need to answer because your dutiful acceptance of everything the elite says without question is doing a lot of damage to this county and your fellow Australians.  You need to start thinking for yourself and you need to do it quickly, because at the moment your lack of critical thinking is like a ball and chain around everyone neck.

Most amusing!  You should try out for The Comedy Team.  Grin

Seriously, ALL we have left are those on The Land for exports of anything "made in Australia".  Everything else we have tried has gone toes up due to Union Dues and over payment for menial tasks and weekend work.  Wink

Folk who want to, say, drive trucks for a living can do so, 40 hours a week at $25/hour.  It IS the loading and serious "double pay" that increases anything that is trucked via a truck.  The driver is still only worth $25 an hour but, suddenly, he thinks he is Upper Class as he is earning $130,000 a year due to all the "overtime", that adds to all the stuff he delivers.

Make truckers only able to work a 40 hour a week and people like Warrigal would get a job "driving a truck" no problem.  Wink Except, that he is "trained" to be a carer or something.  He'd hate driving a truck ... it would mean he had to get up early.  Grin

maybe he just wants to be paid for the real time it takes to do the job? You think if he spends 8 hrs driving and another 3 hrs loading and unloading he should only be paid for the 8?

you could shoot every driver in the country except for Warrigal, and he still wouldn't be able to get a job.

Jeez Nef  ? that is naft..

you would need the multi-nats and  the conglom's and the current Lib/Nat Govt to agree.. Roll Eyes  to have that happen..!!

Because..??  all of them only think in terms of profit.  NOT the greater good.. Shocked
FFS.. nor the common weal  !!??

More and more we have a divided society..  the richer and the poorer..  heading full tilt towards  ...??
might I suggest   CHAOS.

Manaus Island  ... the true epitome of what we have become as a society ....   Sad Sad

And the continued bs coming from our wondrous elected government  ???

..... a total insult to all intelligent people.
