Just about every person I know in IT has lost their job.

It's been outsourced to India or there is  cloud storage.

OK your comments re I.T. taken on board, what I am getting at is that we need to approach this problem intelligently.  How did Richard Branson start out?,By identifying a need and filling it. He still does, saw a great story on him on the ABC recently.

Easy - convert the whole shebang into 'waterside' property for the likes of Andrei to buy up for a song, cash up the current residents, and they can retire to the country with cash in the bank.

"Welcome to Geelong Mews, a Division of Geelong Heights Development Incorporated!  For those with a yen to invest in Australia - we have the best oceanside properties available and our prices are perfect for the flush European or Chinese investor."

*turns on bar stool to face second camera...

"Now some people might have been saying things about this 'Geelong Brotherhood Revolutinary Front", with their stated aim of burning out all the carpet baggers... but friends - and I got this direct from president Billy Jack himself... there is NO Geelong Brotherhood and no Guild of Displaced Worker Assassins Group at large!

Fairy tales to frighten little children into going to bed!  NOBODY is going to nationalise or 'take back' Geelong!  Not in the time of THIS development, let me assure you all!

So - let me take you on a tour of Geelong Neo-Soweto - our new development created by Viking Vandalism Corp in concert with Crack House Developments, both Divisions of Downturn Abbott Group... and just brimming with fine house and beautiful views, and all going for a song!

Here is our promotional film while we bring in the drinks and caviar"........

Note:-  Not a single 'secondary' from any of these hits.

Everyone is concentrating on what is a disappearing industry here. Australians are great at innovation. After all, the first fleet started with a few ships and a tent city.

We have the ability to make Australia a world leader in I.T. for a start. The way forward is education then implementing the clever ideas that come out.

One only has to look at the medical profession to see what a world leader we are in that field.

For God's sake think outside the box and stop crying over what is already gone.

Unfortunately manufacturing got sidelined by the property spruikers and our governments which abandoned manufacturing went along for a ride which is why manufacturing has been dying for the last 30 years.

Before Ireland's property bubble burst it sucked a lot of money away from manufacturing which it used to pump up a property bubble. When the bubble finally burst manufacturing was irreversibly damaged and there were suburbs full of half completed housing estates Sad

The point I am trying to make is that Australia is also now too far gone just like Ireland was. And as all of the corporate welfare handed out to foreign corporations dry up so to will the jobs and the factories. The problem is that aussies never invested for the future unless it was bricks and mortar bullshit  Sad

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *
