Greens oppose the boats as much as anyone. They wanted them stopped, they wanted the smuggling trade broken - they just refused to support punitive measures against asylum seekers to achieve it. The Greens released a policy of ferrying asylum seekers by plane before they got on to boats - and this policy was even copied by Clive Palmer.

If the Greens policy was implemented, boats would have stopped overnight. We also wouldn't be wasting billions every year on offshore detention centres, and we wouldn't be seeing asylum seekers being murdered by people we outsource these detention centres out too.

The story I heard was that G4S asked the locals to participate as back up when they went in. Yes they were being taunted by the refugees - but so what. They were being paid by us to maintain security in the compound and ensure the safety of the refugees.

There appears to be some support for Abbott's hardline stance - and that's a person's prerogative, but those cheering from the sidelines only comprise about 30% of the population. 

We are not primitives and should be adhering to the international standards for human rights. Once we get used to this brutality and violence - it will become acceptable to treat people this way and this government will be no better than some brutal regime in a third world nation.

I was one of those migrants, herbie, and Woodside Immigration Camp was pretty grim. However, we dreamed of the day we would own our own house.

The ASs have no idea if they will ever get out of Manus Is camp.

BTW, terms like “economic migrants” are not worthy of you—you are using euphemisms so you don’t have to think of the ASs as people and families. Some fanbois call them “country shopping economic migrants” and that double euphemism is pretty revealing.
