CFMEU gets put in naughty corner

“MUSCLE flexing” by union heavies which shut down three major construction sites across southeast Queensland has backfired, resulting in Fair Work Australia slapping them with a five-month strike ban.

CFMEU members on Thursday walked off Brookfield Multiplex construction sites at the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment, the new government building at 1 William St, and a private construction site on the Gold Coast.

The snap walk-offs came amid allegations of intimidation and bullying of non-union workers at the Indooroopilly site. Unionists started returning to work at the Gold Coast and William St projects on Friday morning.

Late on Friday, the Fair Work Commission’s senior deputy president Peter Richards ordered Brookfield Multiplex’s workers and subcontractors back to work and effectively banned them from further industrial action for five months.

It follows allegations that unionists were using stand-over tactics to force independent shop fitters at the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment to sign up for union Enterprise Bargain Agreements.

There were reports last month that 200 CFMEU members launched an impromptu rally outside the site, shouting “go home scabs”.

Police had previously confirmed they were called out after threats were made.

The Federal Government’s Fair Work Building and Construction Authority confirmed it had an open investigation into the Indooroopilly worksite, while it was also investigating work stoppages at two other Queensland sites.

Building industry sources, who declined to be named fearing reprisals, alleged the CFMEU was trying to “flex its muscles” at other sites to force the issue at Indooroopilly.

Brookfield Multiplex is the principal contractor for construction at the shopping centre redevelopment, but individual shop fitouts are up to tenants and landlords.

Sources said the work delays put pressure on Brookfield Multiplex to reach its construction deadlines. Failure would lead to financial penalties from its clients. Union EBAs are said to increase wage rates by up to 30 per cent on the final cost of the projects.

Not hard to see how desperate the CFMEU is getting. Membership numbers are dropping like an anvil and to combat the plunge in volunteer memberships, they're going to try to scare people into joining. Despicable, but that's vintage unionism for you.
