Yeah... but...... seriously.. it is getting off the issue to discuss the facilities for puche bike riders in every town.

The simple reality is that the law is way behind on those riders who do the wrong thing - and as operators of a vehicle as defined by law they should be under the same umbrella.

Have to agree with the mobility scooter thing - I saw an ancient guy doing maybe 20 kph on a footpath in town.  Man he couldn't have stopped if someone had stepped out of a shop door.

Well, yes. And no.

Off the topic of this particular incident, for sure.

But then, every town has cyclists, and some are better served than others.

I was in Can't-berra last week to visit the 'Gold of the Incas' exhibition at the
Art Gallery (well worth a look, BTW) and was amazed at the bike-friendly
infrastructure they have there, both in quality and in quantity. And it keeps
the cyclists off the roads (and isn't that what motorists want)?

But in Sydney, they want to hang Clover Moore for trying to do the same thing.

With the exception of a few (admittedly pretty good) cycle paths, my town paints
a 2'strip up one side of the road, and that's your bike lane (very similar to, and
no wider than, the one Summernight was in when she was doored.

Go figure? I can't.

Hmm -  I've long advocated closing off the Sydney CBD to all but those with a car space sticker and commercial vehicles and bicycles.  Those streets are way too close and crowded for real safety and a bigger Mongrel Rail system would have been better than demolishing the one they had.

Hop a train to central and pedal to work in the city....
Just a thought...

2' sounds a bit slim..... on an already narrow road...

Trams maybe..... gotta watch them bisexual bicycle wheels caught in the tracks though..

You don't filter up the left of a left indicating/turning vehicle, that is clearly dumb, and is in breach of the road rules in Vic.

Any other time is OK. Infact, encouraged as it gets you to the 'bike box' at the front of the lane, from where you have priority to commence on the change of lights.

Obviously, do your own risk assessment.

Once more, for the idiot who turned up late...

He wasn't turning. Cyclists can legally pass on the left. It is an offence to open a car door in a manner to cause obstruction or an accident/

She broke no laws.

He did.

The Vict-whorian police agree.

Get it right, and read the previous posts before commenting.

Or p1ss off.

Take a pill and keep your stupidity in check. Just stated the rules, making no comment on the event which occurred as I can see she/he broke no law.

Oh, and thicko, i'm a tad pro cycling...given i regularly do upwards of 450k's a week....

Well - any rule that permits someone to ride into danger, including danger to others, with impunity is not a rule that should be accepted, and one that, indeed, needs to be changed.

It's also not against the law for pushbike riders to ride off a cliff.... so - they should suddenly take leave of their senses and charge at a steel monster in front of them?

Didn't they ever hear the words 'defensive riding'?

The rule needs to be made - same as with buses and school kids - give way - and I would prefer
'No Overtaking When Lights Flashing'
.  I'm happy with that rather than hit a kid.

Not that many kids get nailed every year near buses - but it was enough to bring in at least a speed limit when passing a bus so as to avoid hitting kids running around them.

Should be the same with bikes - no overtaking near gutter when vehicle is stopped... between lanes you take your chances... but that can still lead to being doored...

Spinning an old 45 disc for you now:-

Some guys in the UK got a mobility scooter up to 120 kph

Yep, see above. Personally, from the footage, it isn't what I'd do on that piece of road.

On wider lanes, few or no parked cars, yep, do it every day of the week.

Want me to list all the road rules i see getting bent, broken and abused each day by car drivers??? Really.......stones....glass houses....

Cyclists want to ride along a taxi rank between the taxis and the kerb and expect 'the law' to do the thinking for them (like this woman in the clip)??

This is what happens in an overregulated society - idiots will feel positively entitled to be unthinking, careless idiots.

There is no rear view mirror for back seat passengers. But stand by for some stupid legislation mandating taxis, and soon all private vehicles, to have rear view mirrors for every passenger, back and front, simply because some people are just too fvckn stupid for words.

You are supposed to be more alert to your environment when you are on a bike. I ride every day and I am.
This galoot is obviously zoning out as she rides along on a busy street.

You're wrong on just about everything, Soreass.

Did you even watch the clip. She was not alone, she was not speeding, and she was not on drugs or drunk.

Rightly or wrongly (and I won't get into that) the law in Vict-whoria says she was in the right, and that the
passenger in the cab was in the wrong.

So, I'm going with what the law says, and which has been corroborated by Summernight on our cyclist forum.

She is NOT a 'galoot' by any means., Nor is she 'unthinking' or 'careless'.

If you think the law is wrong, then by all means take it up with the Vict-whorian government and/or their
police, rather than reflexively bagging Summernight.

(Or me, for those who've been doing so)..

And just to confuse the was-it-or-wasn't-it a bike lane issue... they paint a bike in the lane, but it isn't a bike lane unless there's some stupid sign, which could be quite some distance away??? WTF??

Read it, and have a listen to Summernight's take on it.

And you WILL hear the police back her up.

Bet you won't watch, or if you do, you'll skew and spin it.

Painted pictures on the road of bicycles are confusing road users and creating a "false sense of security" because they are not actually bike lanes, the state's top bicycle police officer has said.

Sergeant Arty Lavos, state bicycle operations coordinator, was answering questions about the road rules and bicycles after a taxi passenger was filmed on camera opening a car door into the path of a cyclist travelling down the kerb side of the lane. Known as dooring, the incident occurred on Collins Street, Melbourne on Monday.

Sergeant Lavos said lanes with bicycles drawn on them were not technically bicycle lanes. He pointed out a "classic example" in front of the Victoria Police Centre in Flinders Street.

"That's a painted bicycle symbol in that lane there, but it is not a bike lane because it has no signage," Sergeant Lavos said.

"It must have a "start bike lane" sign on the top (of a pole), as well as the markings on the road, then an end sign either at an intersection or wherever it technically ends," he said.

Not bad, dropkick.

Two or three posts in the thread, NONE of which address the topic, but all of which slag me.

Well done. Goose.

And got them wrong. I've posted the Vic laws several times in this
thread, pretty-much direct quotes from the Vic gunse...er, police.

You then get them wrong, then slag me off and call me a 'thicko'
when I re-post them? Maybe I could have been more tactful
but I've found that carries little weight here.

No, sorry. Can't work that one out.

And I, also, ride daily, both for fun and for transport, around 150
km/week plus on average (it's a small country town of 25,000, not
a big city).

Having just viewed the footage of the cyclist getting doored, I too had a chuckle. Though she might have a point about the passenger needing to take some care, she shouldn't have been riding along the gutter in the first place. I didn't see a bike lane in the footage. Although I will have another look to see if this is the case. The other thing to remember is that she is also a part of the traffic. For her to overtake a vehicle, even if it is coming to a stop, she should have taken precautions and should have slowed down herself.

I'll just assume that the cyclist was just reacting from the adrenaline rush after running into the door. I'm siding with the passenger of that taxi.
