Cyclists want to ride along a taxi rank between the taxis and the kerb and expect 'the law' to do the thinking for them (like this woman in the clip)??

This is what happens in an overregulated society - idiots will feel positively entitled to be unthinking, careless idiots.

There is no rear view mirror for back seat passengers. But stand by for some stupid legislation mandating taxis, and soon all private vehicles, to have rear view mirrors for every passenger, back and front, simply because some people are just too fvckn stupid for words.

You are supposed to be more alert to your environment when you are on a bike. I ride every day and I am.
This galoot is obviously zoning out as she rides along on a busy street.

You're wrong on just about everything, Soreass.

Did you even watch the clip. She was not alone, she was not speeding, and she was not on drugs or drunk.

Rightly or wrongly (and I won't get into that) the law in Vict-whoria says she was in the right, and that the
passenger in the cab was in the wrong.

So, I'm going with what the law says, and which has been corroborated by Summernight on our cyclist forum.

She is NOT a 'galoot' by any means., Nor is she 'unthinking' or 'careless'.

If you think the law is wrong, then by all means take it up with the Vict-whorian government and/or their
police, rather than reflexively bagging Summernight.

(Or me, for those who've been doing so)..

You have to bee a galoot, trying ride a bike between taxis and the kerb at a at a taxi rank - just because a law didn't specifically say 'use common sense'.

Why not cycle between buses and the kerb at a bus station?

Galoot is correct.

I've never seen a bike lane as narrow as that & it appears it wasn't one. So the bike rider is in the wrong.

Only an idiot would attempt to pass up the inside in that narrow space. I support the comments made to her by the alighting passengers.

they do have stupid bike lanes in Melbourne like that... virtually riding in the drain...

but the fricken cyclist only ride in them when the lights are go red... filtering up the inside when passengers may be getting out..

they are on the outside of you, up the inside of you... if they obeyed the road rules like the rest of the traffic then they'd never get hit by a door..

cyclist are calling this a "dooring" ...

bullshit..

dooring is deliberate... that incident wasn't ....

im positive some of these cyclist only wear a camera to try and get into an incident so that they can post it on line and get all "wanked" up...

I hate it when a group of them come into a café when we're in there... all LOUD MOUTHED obnoxious rsoles...  Angry

these cyclist also need to wear numberplates and pay tax for their "special" lanes...

you'd raise a lot of money to pay for their "special" lanes with all of their traffic infringements..

Look, I saw the footage of that incident and I saw the so called bike lane.
Seriously, it is only about a foot wide and right up against the gutter.

When a taxi pulls over, you assume you can get out.
The incident was not deliberate and in fact those men could potentially have been hurt more than that cyclist.

Having said that, if I opened a door and hit someone, I would help them up and say sorry, I didn't see you.
But I thought the cyclist was very aggressive too. demanding they hand over details. I would not have handed over my name and address either.
And if I were a cyclist, riding in the city, and saw a taxi stopped ahead of me-would I thunder past on the left side, on my bike? Nope.

Someone here mentioned the council stated the little section next to the path is not an official designated bike lane. It sure does not look like it as I have never seen one in such a location, on the left of where a car would park. The ones I have seen are all on the right of the parking lane. It would be a stupid spot on the left as drivers and passengers are used to checking the right side of a car before alighting, but not the kerb side.

I think the cyclist, even if it turns out she was technically in the 'right' needs to wake up and show a bit more caution.

You don't filter up the left of a left indicating/turning vehicle, that is clearly dumb, and is in breach of the road rules in Vic.

Any other time is OK. Infact, encouraged as it gets you to the 'bike box' at the front of the lane, from where you have priority to commence on the change of lights.

Obviously, do your own risk assessment.

Once more, for the idiot who turned up late...

He wasn't turning. Cyclists can legally pass on the left. It is an offence to open a car door in a manner to cause obstruction or an accident/

She broke no laws.

He did.

The Vict-whorian police agree.

Get it right, and read the previous posts before commenting.

Or p1ss off.

Take a pill and keep your stupidity in check. Just stated the rules, making no comment on the event which occurred as I can see she/he broke no law.

Oh, and thicko, i'm a tad pro cycling...given i regularly do upwards of 450k's a week....

And got them wrong. I've posted the Vic laws several times in this
thread, pretty-much direct quotes from the Vic gunse...er, police.

You then get them wrong, then slag me off and call me a 'thicko'
when I re-post them? Maybe I could have been more tactful
but I've found that carries little weight here.

No, sorry. Can't work that one out.

And I, also, ride daily, both for fun and for transport, around 150
km/week plus on average (it's a small country town of 25,000, not
a big city).

Left turning vehicle
Rule: A bike rider must not ride on the left side of a vehicle that is indicating left and turning at an intersection.
Tip: Stay in the traffic lane behind the turning vehicle.

Let's start again thicko....I'm not actually disagreeing with you  Grin

When I said he/she broke no rules I was referring to the cyclist. Not the fat slobs who got out of the cab, it is easy to see they are male.

I will type slower in future thicko so you may have a better chance to understand.

Sorry, but I do not agree with that at all.

It's the same as some do with the unemployed... have a bad experience or
a clash with one, and the lot get tarred with the same brush.

The overwhelming majority of the cyclists (in my town at any rate) are nothing
like this stereotype many of you seem to have about cyclists.

The real villains, cyclist-wise, are the kids and teens/young adults on clapped-out
and dangerous BMX and MTB bikes which shouldn't be on the road at all due to
safety concerns, not the average 'mature' rider.

Makes sense... someone riding a bike worth thousands of dollars (up to $20k for
some) isn't going to want to lose that by crashing it or doing something stupid.

The brat or late-teen on a pile of junk with no lights or brakes has no such qualms.

That's three times now that you've called me a 'thicko' for pointing-out that the car
was not turning, and that filtering up the LHS is legal for bicycles?

No, still can't work that one out.

Maybe the 'thicko' epithet could be better applied to the geese who made the rules
and who create inadequate bike infrastructure, rather than to someone who's merely
reiterating what the rules actually state.

The legalities of what the cyclist did doesn't matter. In my opinion it's idiotic, dangerous & lacks common sense.

I've oft used the cliche, "you can't legislate for idiots"

It seems you can Roll Eyes

I still have no sympathy for her. In my estimation she's wrong.

I thought the same thing when I first saw it, but then I realised that she was in a marked cycle lane. He should have checked or at the very least the taxi driver should have checked the mirrors and warned the passenger to not open the doors.

There is no dedicated bike lane on the part of Collins Street where the crash happened.

The area it occurred is more of a nightmare since the super tramstop was built........there's now only one lane for other traffic and the place where cyclists are permitted to ride along the kerbside is far too narrow. It appears from the video that the taxi driver moved as close as he could to the left of his lane to permit departure of his passengers and this left too little room for the cyclist to avoid the opening door.

Would the incident have been avoided if the taxi driver had put on his left hand indicator???? Perhaps.  Should the cyclist have anticipated departure of passengers since the taxi was stopped left of other traffic in the lane??? Perhaps.

The only way I can envisage widening of the kerbside lane is by reconstructing the kerb further left and thus reducing the width of the footpath. Like it or not, cyclists in the CBD are here to stay. Don't get me wrong, there are idiot cyclists and idiot drivers and no amount of sound infrastructure will eliminate all instances of "dooring"......

Yes for other pedestrians maybe not a bike rider.

If she had been riding down the footpath toward or from behind me & I heard/saw her coming I'd be tempted to coat hanger her off her bike.  Angry
