whats wrong with some of you people? Of course you look before opening the car door regardless which side you are getting out. And the idiot who caused the accident just walked away.

Most people do not expect to have to be looking BEHIND when they are opening the door against a kerb, ian -  It's one thing to look outisde the door - but what sane person would expect someone to try to push a bicycle up such a narrow non-lane against a gutter when a cab has just stopped?

Al Capone got twenty years for tax EVASION - just because the Guv here merely takes it out of your hide without prosecuting you doesn't mean it's legal..

My thoughts exactly.
I would say the passenger got an almighty fright, too.

My daughter was travelling up Beach road on the weekend, said bikes there were travelling 6 abreast, taking up one entire traffic lane. Now that is just getting ridiculous. In a case like that, how can you not drive within a metre, without going over to the wrong side of the road?

it wasnt against a kerb. If it was the cyclist wouldnt have got doored. You people just make stuff up to suit your argument. The taxi passenger was in the wrong.

Yes for other pedestrians maybe not a bike rider.

If she had been riding down the footpath toward or from behind me & I heard/saw her coming I'd be tempted to coat hanger her off her bike.  Angry

Anyone who tried that on with me would want to know a proctologist and a good orthodontist.

And a lawyer.

Door 'em all - let GOD sort 'em out!

For a wealthy man your use of English is pretty poor.... trying to evade the discussion on tax evasion?

Saves lives though - and a few doored cyclists.... just saying..

I have a blind van and I am going to install a camera that allows me to see down that side....

(heh, heh - that way I can line 'em up good and' proper!  Grin.. might see about remote controlled swinging doors with a sight that will enable accurate swinging)

Point acknowledged. But the bike rider has to concede that she shouldn't have rode up the inside of the stopping taxi. It's reasonable to assume that a passenger wouldn't think that a cyclist would ride along the gutter side of the taxi.

I wonder who funded that poll? Perhaps some weight loss company looking to discourage people from riding their bikes, and getting more clients?

The financial benefits of riding your bicycle around are just as important as the physical. I think it's just ridiculous that drivers are out there with an entitlement attitude to the road, when realistically, they should only use the road when necessary. Use the road to get where you are going, and then get off. None of this showing off your V6 cars "doing laps around the suburbs" poo. So sick of having to wait for traffic on my way to work, just because some airheads think that they need to drive their cars to the shops down the road or pick up their able bodied and responsibly minded teenagers that don't want to do a 2km walk/bike ride home.

Its just common sense to look before you open a car door or cross a street (even a one way street). Its even common sense to look before walking out of a building into a crowded footpath. Seriously - why not just look first?
