I actually do ride on the pavement as much as possible ~ carefully.

The reason?

Villa ghetto-housing on quarter acre blocks. It's a recent development and there are scores of them in my neighbourhood already.

What happens is no one can be bothered to park their cars inside these courtyard areas ~ and so they park outside, along the street.

Consequence? I'm forced to ride my bike in the second lane where the cars are streaming past.

I was driving on a bendy road with double white lines and I knew there were bikes on the road, (they are every weekend)
I also knew that car drivers get pissed off and take a blind chance of passing the bikes over the double whites.

Soooo, I slowed down to avoid an accident with any oncoming traffic that may have been overtaking the bikes.

The car driver behind me went apeshit waving his hands then passed me giving me the one finger sign.
Loverly man had his young child in the front with him and two road bikes on the towbar.

You just cant please those bike riders.

It is silly to have laws that encourage bike riders to get killed.
In the heat of the moment if a driver has to choose between hitting a car or a bike, the bike is dead.
Car drivers do do the wrong thing, they will get pissed off by bike riders taking up the whole road, they will take a blind chance.
Bike riders should have to keep single file, no point in them sticking to their rites and getting squashed.

There are 2 very basic road rules involved here
1. Don't pass on the left
2. Give way to the right
The cyclist tried to pass on the left making the car/cab on her right.
I've never seen a bike lane as narrow as that & it appears it wasn't one. So the bike rider is in the wrong.

Only an idiot would attempt to pass up the inside in that narrow space. I support the comments made to her by the alighting passengers.

It is LEGAL for cyclists to pass on the left-side, certainly in Vict-whoria.

This is fact, not a 'claim' or a 'guess'.

Also, it is ILLEGAL to open a car door in such a manner as to cause an obstruction or accident.

This, also, is a fact, again in Vict-whoria.

I've certainly seen bike lanes as narrow, if not narrower. I do ride daily, remember. There was
some conjecture at first re whether it was a bike lane or not, but you are correct, it is not.

Officially. But it does get used as one regularly, apparently.

But again, considering the laws I've mentioned above, she still was not 'in the wrong'.

The Vict-whorian police seem to agree with me, for some reason. Could it be that I might be
right?

**Adds: The woman concerned is a member of a certain cycling forum, as am I. She definitely
does NOT come across as a smartass or a fool, and is noted for promoting safe cycling, and
cycling in general. She is certainly nothing like she's being portrayed here and elsewhere by
'people' whose hatred of cyclists seems to border on the pathological.

Some of the comments posted online make me seriously question the fitness of the posters
to hold a driver's licence.**

So I take it he was passing on the inside - a traffic offence?

Tough titties - I've advocated for years that cyclists should wear a numbered jacket so they can be identified when breaking the law.

I used to drive a blind van around Sydney city (sometimes ) and was once in the midddle of a left turn with green arrow when I heard this wailing sound coming from te left - I stopped immediately - being a good driver - and barely missed a cyclist courier screaming through on my inside against the law.

Had I not stopped you can imagine who he'd try to blame.

Many other incidents spring to mind - red light running, turning into a one way street the wrong way and forcing me to stop suddenly while driving the correct way etc -and all I can say is if they wish to carry on with suicidal actions while riding in traffic - they have only themselves to blame.

Number 'em and charge 'em an annual fee for registration of the number - fine em for traffic offences.

The road laws say 'vehicle' - anything used to convey a person - that includes a horse etc as well and many a person has been done for traffic offences while riding a horse.

Same applies to bicycle riders.
