Newman gets $70k pay rise
Mar 27th, 2014 at 3:19pm

Most Queensland MPs are getting a wage rise, with new pay scales determined for the Premier, Opposition Leader, ministers and committee members.

An independent remuneration tribunal was introduced in August last year after the Government backed down on controversial plans for a 42 per cent wage increase.

The tribunal set a base wage for MPs, but has only now come up with a new formula for those with extra responsibilities.

The new pay scale grants Premier Campbell Newman a rise of about 22 per cent, while Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk's pay will go up by about 34 per cent.

Mr Newman's pay packet will increase by almost $70,000 to about $380,000 a year.

John Howard would have declined it.

The ALP Leader has asked Newmann to intervene, and 'fix' this.  I did not see all of QT today and it was from the Senate, but I'm sure I saw Abetz chiding federal public servants for a  wage increase they are seeking.

Newmann has sacked in excess of 15,000 Qld State Public servants, Medical Practitioners in the Health Dept are about to walk out en mass.....and he pulls this stunt.  Just another nail on the coffin.

Far past the time when "independent remuneration tribunals" for pollies salaries, water/power price rises were disbanded.

Make pollies responsible, i.e., take the blame, for setting their own remuneration and increases in utility prices.

380k for a Premier doesn't seem excessive.
It is a big and demanding job, even if I may not like Newman, I have to accept it is a salary many in the private sector exceed, with far fewer responsibilities.

Yeas, that is the argument being adopted to support the increase.  The fundamental difference is that CEOs do not have a zillion Departments to do the work for him and a gazillion Department Heads and Deputy Heads to advise them and  an Office full of clevah dicks in the Premier's Dept to hold his hand at all times.

I don't begrudge pollies pay rises. They have to put any career they had on hold - often being unable to return to that career after leaving politics.

In a large corporation, you'll often find middle managers on salaries of around $200k when they're doing little more than managing a dozen or two staff and not having to put in more than 40-45hrs a week. A pollie has way more on their plate than that.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Dunno the number off hand but I think it's about 32%, a % increase greater than that of the Premier's.  She has not rejected it.....but has required the Premier to 'fix' it.

That hasn't been my experience. A large company will have hundreds and hundreds, in some cases, thousands, working at its head office - same deal - gazillion dept heads and deputy heads - spending the bulk of their time in meetings and to be there to advise the CEO.

Might be the sheltered life I've lead, but I can't think of one CEO, let alone lots, who have the management resources a State Premier has at his disposal.

Huh
