That hasn't been my experience. A large company will have hundreds and hundreds, in some cases, thousands, working at its head office - same deal - gazillion dept heads and deputy heads - spending the bulk of their time in meetings and to be there to advise the CEO.

Might be the sheltered life I've lead, but I can't think of one CEO, let alone lots, who have the management resources a State Premier has at his disposal.

Huh

I don't see why any politician should be earning as much as they do.

Teachers and nurses get around $60,000 .

All are payed by the taxpayer, why should teachers and nurses get far less?

I don't begrudge pollies pay rises. They have to put any career they had on hold - often being unable to return to that career after leaving politics.

In a large corporation, you'll often find middle managers on salaries of around $200k when they're doing little more than managing a dozen or two staff and not having to put in more than 40-45hrs a week. A pollie has way more on their plate than that.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Damn - you mean all those lawyers can't get to go back to being lawyers with their fat retirement package already well in hand?

What a load of cods!!

People line up to employ these turkeys in nice sinecures for life, mostly for doing nothing.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but don't these 'independent tribunals' (tribulations?) also set their own salaries in line with those of politicians etc - and does this not create a serious conflict of interest?

Whatever % they give the pollies they also get themselves.....

Yes, but a pollies real earnings aren't his salary, that's just the cherry on top. The real lucrative part of the job is the perks, the kickbacks, the inside knowledge, the favours and the promises of sweet, high-paying jobs managing 2 dozen staff for 40 hours a week after leaving office, and of the course the holy grail - the parliamentary pension for life - that are the real remuneration.  They'd still be wealthy if the position of premier was unpaid.

the parliamentary pension for life

I believe that was abolished during the Howard era. These days, new MPs just get money paid into a super scheme. The generous parliamentary pension is gone.

I heard a discussion on radio the other day, that there's now the possibility of an ex-MP or even a PM, falling on hard times before they're eligible to collect their super and that perhaps a fund is needed to deal with that eventuality.

The judge said Williamson was in a position of power when he defrauded the union of nearly $1 million.

Williamson is facing a possible 20 years in jail after pleading guilty to four charges including fraud and recruiting others to hinder a police investigation.

Prosecutors say Williamson, who was already on a salary of about $500,000, was motivated by greed.

The court has been told the former Australian Labor Party president submitted false invoices to the union from a company in his wife's name.

Williamson's lawyers say he has apologised and taken full responsibility for his actions, noting he has also suffered depression since his behaviour was exposed.

More to come.  AND YOU BUMS WORRY ABOUT NEWMAN Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I read somewhere that Newmans new salary is not that far behind Barrack Obama's ... I tried to find it again but couldn't ... seriously?

Once again the libs show how out of touch they are with their electorate .... their salaries should be mandated to go up in line with every other public service job, after all , he;s just another public servant but he does less work  ... if he wants a 2.2% increase for public servants, why does he get a 42% increase ?

disgraceful.

Politicians with their snouts in the trough.

Most people don't even get $70,000 yet alone a pay rise of that much.

They should get the minimum wage of $16.30 per hour
to see how their people have to live.
