ACTU wants raise for 1.5 million

Date
    March 27, 2014

The growth in the minimum wage is lagging behind average weekly earnings, risking Australia's reputation as the country of the "fair go", according to the ACTU.

As Australia's peak union prepares to submit its case for a rise in the minimum wage to the Fair Work Commission, the union has released modelling based on ABS and OECD data that shows Australia's lowest-paid workers are falling further behind.      Sad

Two decades ago, Australia's minium wage was 60 per cent of average full-time wages. It now stands at just 43.3 per cent. The full-time minimum wage is $16.37 per hour or $622.20 per week. Last June, the commission granted a self-described "modest" rise of 2.6 per cent.

ACTU national secretary Dave Oliver said the union would ask the commission on Friday for a wage rise for 1.5 million low-paid workers including cleaners, retail and hospitality staff and childcare workers.      Smiley

"[Australia is] going down the path of the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' — with the 'have-not' population growing," he said.      Sad

"The annual minimum wage review is the only chance for a pay increase for 1.5 million of Australia's lowest-paid workers, and helps set the pay and pay increases of many more. Australia is becoming a high-cost country to live in."

Employers fight $8.50 wage rise      Sad

Date
    March 28, 2014

Australia's largest employer group has called for a minimum wage rise of just $8.50 a week, or 1.3 per cent – less than half the forecast rise in the cost of living of 2.7 per cent.      Sad

But the ACTU wants a rise of $27 a week from $622.20 to $649.20, an increase of 3.9 per cent – triple the amount proposed by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

The ACCI submission to the Fair Work Commission's annual hearing on the minimum wage has been backed up by the Master Grocer's Association, which called for a 1.25 per cent rise, while on Thursday, the Australian Hotels Association and Restaurant and Catering Australia went further in calling for a wage freeze. The commission granted a self-described "modest" rise of 2.6 per cent last year.

This year's hearing is the first since the change of government and comes as Liberal MPs and business groups step up their campaign to rein in penalty rates, as the federal government launches a royal commission into union corruption and as the government prepares to launch a Productivity Commission inquiry into the Fair Work laws.

In its submission, the ACCI states economic growth is below trend, labour market conditions are weak, job opportunities for the low paid are diminishing and that "there are heightened risks to growth that the minimum wage panel must take into consideration". Chief operating officer John Osborn said an unreasonable rise would result in job losses and fewer jobs.

Nah, a valid point. If wages grow too slowly then consumption also grows too slowly.

THIS is class warfare:

I'll post it for yez when I get home - I've rather poorly attempted a rendition of the current social/economic divides in this country - starting from the vastly overpaid etc all the way down to those with no hope any more.

The last are titled 'The Never-Will-Haves' - and they are a growing demographic here.

No.. as before, we are being split more and more into ever-increasing Great Divides in many, many ways, and on top of all that, the world economy is about to collapse.....

Microeconomically, we are being split along growing lines of:-

Ultra-haves ( mega incomes etc,  dual income is irrelevant since it is all 'business structures'

- every prospect for every thing)

Haves  (high incomes/double good incomes, excellent prospects)

Marginals (single good income/dual income just level-pegging ..good word, limited prospects)

Have-nots (inadequate dual income/single income, very limited prospects)

Never-will haves (no real income/ no prospects)
