I expect NO bi-election, and the seat will be Labor.

There is a difference though. American presidents must be native-born Americans and this cannot be changed. Either one is eligible or one isn't. Naturalised Australians aren't eligible for election unless and until they also renounce prior citizenship. The paperwork is more complex.

I suspect the law on dual citizens may have changed over time - both here and in the UK - and we shouldn't make assumptions on naturalisation status in 1981 by applying current laws.

I consider Abbott's eligibility an open question.

If Abbott's eligibility was in question, I think the main reason why we haven't seen much is there's only a limited time frame for disputing an election result. That time frame has passed. I'm not sure the constitutionality of the limited time frame for disputing eligibility under s.44 has ever been tested though. Another is that any litigant needs deep pockets.
