ILLEGAL immigrants from Sri Lanka who are not claiming to be refugees but are overwhelming the detention system are being targeted for forced returns, some within 48 hours of arrival.

The Gillard government's new focus includes regular forced returns of Sri Lankans to their home country, Australian Federal Police working in Sri Lanka to target people-smugglers, quickly classifying illegal arrivals as economic migrants, refusing "reintegration assistance" for those forcibly returned and sending the most recent arrivals to Nauru and Manus Island.

In the three months since the government announced its policy of putting asylum-seekers in detention centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea for five years, more than 3500 Sri Lankans have arrived illegally by boat, with most not being from the Tamil minority that lost the civil war three years ago. In all, 7868 asylum-seekers have arrived since the August 13 announcement.

There is a doco on youtube in which sri lankan "asylum seekers" admit they are coming here for employment.  They think we have lots of employment opportunities for them and lots of money to pay them.

Don't have time to look for it again...  one of you LW patsies can look for it.  Educate yourselves.

I would say that there are some asylum seekers who are coming to Australia as economic migrants.....That is why their claims are assessed and those who are not valid refugees are sent home.....What is wrong with this process that has been happening in Australia for many decades???

Huh Huh Huh

I'm not going to waste my time looking for something that doesn't exist.

You make the claim - you provide the evidence.

That is exactly what he wanted.   Now, he'll demand (as he has with me on another issue) that you prove it does not exist.

Nah, Grendel.

You have to wonder why so many decide to go back home if conditions are so bad rather than wait it out in the safety of detention.

Nah, Grendel.

Twisted "logic" is his forte.

He just sprouts blatant lies; claims that there is evidence to support his lies; and then tells others to go and find that "evidence", because he's too busy (supposedly making up more lies).

He's a funny old fellow, is Grendel.

They're not stopping them - they're diverting them...

It's all in the spin as the pilot said after his aircraft's tail fell off...

I kept watching until about the six minute mark.  The first thing to note is that contrary to Abbott's claims, the boats have not been stopped.

What was the date of that story, Grendel?
