Now Abbott goes after the Pensioners
Apr 1st, 2014 at 6:27am

Oh great, following the great asset sell off news.

We now have news from the bunker that the Abbott Government is about to go after Pensioners hard.

Forget about the fact that huge multi national companies like Google and Apple are paying bugger all tax on this Country and shifting their profits off shore.

No, don't touch them Tony not when you can go after the people, least able to defend themselves, after the Pensioners who are lucky to have enough left to pay the light bill.

You are effectively committing Political suicide after getting off to a good start.

You have lost me. I don't like liars and you are one.

There was none of this sh.t in your policies during the election, you have defrauded all of us.

Yours will be a one term Government.

Its not a good idea for a government to go after large voting blocks - ever. Gillard did it with the single mothers and now abbott with the pensioners - and there are a LOT of them.

And a considerable percentage of them probably voted for him, too.

Bet there'll be a lot who won't be, in 2016.

The only talk is about raising retirement age. I cannot find anything about pensioners being hit. If you are currently on a pension then it is life as usual.

Incorrect....... there are rumblings that Abbott & Hockey will be using the family home for means testing so to cut out or reduce pensioner entitlements e.g. PBS & Doctors visits & hospital stays.

What will a pensioner who is cash poor going to have to do?

Sell their house to pay the bills & then try to survive paying rent?

multi national companies often shift their profits off shore when tax's become high, high enough they are no longer willing to pay, rising tax's would result in more profits moving off shore.

Taxing the hell out of companies will not solve our problems and all we will be doing is shooting ourselves in the foot. Going after Pensioners pay will also achieve very little, and is not the answer.

We need to be creating wealth not cutting and taxing.

Oh and at this point, they wont be a one term Government.

There's talk about including the family home in the assets test. That's so old pensioners will be forced to sell their home to rich chinese investors who will rent them back to them Sad

But is for current of future pensioners?

Pensions are already means tested. You can't own millions of dollars in properties and get a pension. Isn't this about lowering the cut off on future Pensioners? Just like if your 66 and the retirement age is raised to 68 your not expected to go back to work for two years. Surely this is the same thing thing. If you are 75 in a family house which would now be worth too much under the new system it doesn't matter as it was under the limit when you went on the pension.

I'm happy to be corrected if that is not the case, but I haven't read anything where current pensions need to worry.

(So as to be clear, I would be very much against any current pensioner having to sell up the family home because their property value has gone up over the years and they would now be deemed too wealthy under any new thresholds).

What about the old folk who have bought  their house for a song back in the 60's ? It's not their fault that successive governments have meddled in the property market and helped overinflate house prices Sad

Thank you for contributing absolutely nothing but to turn this thread into another one of your "I can't afford a house" rants.

But in answer to your question, let me repeat;

So as to be clear, I would be very much against any current pensioner having to sell up the family home because their property value has gone up over the years and they would now be deemed too wealthy under any new thresholds
