Well done on demonstrating yet again the paucity of your debating style by using a deflection. And your case was weakened pretty substantially by denying His existence in the first place. So far, you are not doing real well at this.

The title of this thread is: "How gullible are some people?"

My answer is: "Very".

Exhibit A:

"His existence is beyond doubt. There is far more evidence for Jesus' existence than most figures of antiquity."

Then why don't you cite references to support your position?

Doesn't work that way, old chum.

You are the one claiming that Jesus Christ existed: it's up to you to provide evidence.

However, I can play your childish game if you wish ...

The world was created by an invisible purple unicorn that lives at the bottom of my garden.

You think I'm wrong?  Well, in that case, why don't you cite references to support your position?

Smiley

It would be quite easy to do, but the problem is ...

" ... I can't do it."

That's all you had to say.

No need to lie among friends.

God bless you (or Jesus, or whatever fictional character it is that you follow).

Love to chat, but I have some book reviews to do for Amazon.

Cheers.

There are few more lame or self-defeating actions in a debate than to misquote or quote out of context your opponent.  It is completely in line with my claim that you are debating well outside your division.

Then why don't you cite references to support your position?

Debating 101. I began with the well-established de facto position. You are the interloper claiming it is wrong. You are required by any rules of reasonable debate to substantiate your claim in at least prima facie fashion to avoid pointless argument of the already proven.

Now when you can come up with a prima facie argument then we can start.  In the meantime you just look under-prepared and certainly, under-informed.

The vast majority of humanity dont believe in your jesus. Some believe in other ppl (like Krishna and mohammed) but some dont believe in any of them. Yours is not the default position.

SOB

Vast majority?  Apart from the spurious nature of your claim, there are actually very very few people who deny He existed. Muslims accept He existed and acclaim Him as a prophet.

I would submit that the vast majority accepts Jesus' existence without question.

But those videos were all fabricated!?  Don't you realise how easy it is to do that?  Hitler never existed and you have no absolute proof to the contrary. Even a court of law does not accept a picture or video as proof positive unless the authenticity thereof can be proven.

All you have is misquotes. That's all you can do because you have no argument.

Ok...

I've read it.

Here's my review:

By Amazon Customer "grrreg"

"An oxymoron written by a nice person"

"Conservative values and institutions are what revolutions occur to change. The idea that you can have a revolution to institute conservative thinking and approaches is wrong-headed, shows a possible deliberate disregard for the truth, and is by dictionary definition an oxymoron. And by his words, Cory Bernardi shows he is a simple nice person and undeserving of holding any position of power, elected, appointed or employed."

So I read your review. As I was reading it I found this...

Quote:
I work for the Australian Government, and my reading habits have changed quite a bit in recent times. This is because my work has become more demanding, so I want my reading to be less demanding.

As such, I'm mostly reading genre fiction - principally the Doctor Who series (as it was my favourite TV show as a child) and Sherlock Holmes books (which I started reading as a teenager).

I'm currently submitting reviews of books I am reading (some of which have been sitting on my shelf for a few years!) and going back over all the Doctor Who books, both adaptations and original novels.

By the way, I have found the Amazon Auctions area excellent for finding out-of-print Doctor Who books, and would heartily recommend the services of Third Zone (who use the name 'supremedalek' in auctions) who have given me excellent service.

Along with reviews for 341 other books, mostly Doctor Who.

What was it you said again?

Yes, I am denying that I'm employed by the government, and I'm denying that I do book reviews on Amazon.

Caught in your own lies and no way out.

No way out of what?

Try to remain focused.

Do you have any evidence to substantiate that JC actually existed?

You seem to be trying to change the subject, now that you've been backed into a corner.

I'm afraid that consensus of opinion does not establish fact.

He may have existed, then again, he may not have existed.

One thing for sure: it is not "beyond doubt", and it is not "fact".

The same can be said for every person and event in history. You are free to ignore every history book ever written, but if you want to mock people for accepting what is written in them, the onus is on you to show that history as we know it is wrong.

I'm talking about JC; nobody else.

The onus is on the believers to provide evidence of his existence.

Not doin' too good, so far.

I have no problem with faith.  If people want to believe that stuff, good luck to them.

However, when they start using terms like "beyond doubt" and "fact", they're just making themselves look foolish.

we are applying your standard to EVERYONE as would be appropriate.

By your standard, the existence of anyone dead over 100 years is impossible. Which is why you look like such a clown arguing the way you do.  In fact, you are perhaps the truly gullible one in that you believe anything YOU say and nothing anyone else says.

I'm not here to prove Hitler's existence.

I couldn't care less about him, or what people think about him.

Now, try to remain focused, my boy.

You claim that JC actually existed, but you can't substantiate your claim.

Wasn't it you who said "beyond doubt", and "fact"?

Tsk tsk

You're going nowhere fast, my boy.

Sock accusations now? Is that the best you got to deflect from the fact you have no bloody idea what you are talking about?

Greggery was the one who threw the baby out with the bathwater right at the start. He made the claim Jesus never existed. Yet all mainstream historians accept that the Jesus of the Bible was a real person, the only dispute is whether he did all the things the Bible says he did. Maybe if you took the time to read a bit of history you wouldn't have been so fast to jump on such an idiotic position as to say Jesus never existed.

This thread has shown that a few people are all talk and no knowledge. You, Spot, pecca, have all been so fast to mock others about historical issues that none of you realised just how much ignorance you were all displaying. Idiotic comments about there not being enough records or those that we do have being dated after the event are ignorant to the extreme. Your belief in Roman record keeping is itself apart of the very historical record that you mock when it is convenient. All people such as Alexander the Great, Alfred the Great, Galileo, Darwin, and any other name from history not only all have myth around them, but also have very few records of their existence from their own time. Even World War Two was not written about in any meaningful until after the war was finished. In fact the best works are being written this century as emotions cool and the missing pieces come to light. But I can just imagine people like you 1000 years from now saying "World War Two never happened. The history books you quote from were written years after the fact. We can't really know anything about that time. There was no Hitler!" An outrageous statement to anyone today, but no more different than the ignorance people like you display towards the events and people of the past.

If we are to dispute the myths then by your reasoning we must also dispute the existence of the very person. If the records we have post date the person then they to must be discarded. Anything else would be a total inconsistency and would turn history into nothing but personal belief without any framework. I think you would be shocked at just how few people from history measure up to your standards of proof if you took the same position with them that you are taking with Jesus.

Nope. No valid historian would claim that jesus existed. Some prolly will say that someone named jesus
*may* have existed to get religious nuts off their back but they wouldn't claim he existed as a fact because thats not what history is about. History is about facts.

Your idea of "mainstream"must be very strange . . .

More proof of how disconcerted from reality you really are. Now you claim historians are lying about the existence of Jesus just to shut Christians up! You really are a sad delusional old fool.

My idea of mainstream is what is mainstream. Go into a library (ever heard on one of them?) and open up some history books dealing with this period. Shock horror they will mention Jesus and accept the fact that he really existed. Your belief that Jesus never actually existed only exist in the realms of atheist blogs and by people like you posting on websites like this. Your views are not mainstream, they are the very opposite.

Correct: the vast majority.

Carrot cake please Frances.

Do you use a recipe book or is the recipe passed on by word of mouth?

I was asked to make it, so I'm not going to turn around and do something else.  I was going to make a carrot cake last week, but I ended up making banana bread instead, as I had three bananas that were too ripe to leave any longer.

It's a pear and raspberry cake, from a recipe by Neil Perry.  Last time I used blueberries but this time I'm using raspberries - the slight tartness of the raspberries should work well.  I'm not lucky enough to have any secret recipes passed down to me (cooking and baking didn't figure prominently among my mother's talents anyway).

The cake only went in about 20 minutes ago because I had to go out to get the pears and raspberries and I spent a bit of time looking around the shops....

2 ripe pears, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
juice of one lemon
180g butter, softened
180g sugar
2 eggs
200g self raising flour
100g almond meal
2 tablespoons milk
250g fresh or frozen raspberries

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius.  Spray a 20cm springform pan with spray oil, and line the base with baking paper.

Pour the lemon juice over the chopped pears and toss to cover the pear chunks so that they don't brown.

Put the butter and sugar into the bowl  of a stand mixer, and beat until pale and creamy.  In a cup, beat the eggs together with a fork, then add it in a steady stream to the butter and sugar mixture while continuing to beat it.

In a separate bowl, sift in the flour, then whisk in the almond meal.  Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, fold the flour and almond meal into the butter mixture in 3 separate lots.  The batter will become very thick - don't worry!  Stir in the milk, then carefully add the pears and raspberries to the batter and fold into the mixture with the rubber spatula.

Place the batter into the prepared springform pan, and smooth over the top with a metal spatula or knife.  Put the cake into the pre-heated oven and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until cooked through.  Remove the cooked cake from the oven and cool in the springform pan on a wire rack.

Once the cake is cool, run a knife around the edge of the pan to release the cake from the sides, then take the cake out of the pan.  Dust with icing sugar if desired and serve.

Yes, outrageous because of evidence like this:

Do you have any video footage of Jesus Christ?

Oh, hang on ... I take that back:

All you have is misquotes. That's all you can do because you have no argument.

What's not a misquote is this;

Please try harder in the future.

Or else what?
