Rural deaths highlight ambulance under-resourcing: union

Date
    April 6, 2014

Two men died waiting for ambulances in a 24-hour period in Gippsland last week, with the paramedics union claiming the regional centre is as stretched for cover as a remote area.      Shocked

A 60-year-old man having a heart attack at Toorloo Arm near near Lakes Entrance waited 50 minutes for an ambulance on Tuesday evening but was unable to be revived by the time the nearest available crew from Bairnsdale arrived.      Sad

On Wednesday morning, a 72-year-old man collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at Bemm River, east of Orbost, and was forced to wait an hour and 15 minutes for an ambulance, which came from Lakes Entrance as the Orbost ambulance station was unstaffed. He died at the scene.      Sad

The deaths come after a seriously injured victim of an alleged bashing waited almost two hours for an ambulance in Lakes Entrance last month.

Michael McNamara, 43, had bleeding in his brain, a fractured neck, broken ribs, a fractured eye socket and a broken nose and was left vomiting and bloody after the incident.

At the time, Ambulance Victoria conceded resourcing in the area was not sufficient.

Danny Hill, assistant secretary of Ambulance Employees Australia, the paramedics’ union which is trying to negotiate better pay and conditions with the Napthine government, said: ‘‘Our members who work down that way are starting to feel that Gippsland has become a remote area when it comes to getting an ambulance but Bairnsdale, Sale, Lakes Entrance are major towns.

You’ve got hundreds off square meters of the state that are at any one time completely uncovered, it’s a major problem.’’      Sad

Ambulance Victoria has been contacted for comment.

We will have to start taking them to hospital in private cars, like they do in third world countries. Australia.....third world? not quite, let's be realistic and say second world.

Looks like the 3rd world is smarter than us many australians. What's going to be quicker - putting the front bottom in a car and driving 50k to the hospital OR waiting for the ambulance to drive 50k to you, then driving 50k back?

People call an ambulance because they expect the ambulance to be the fastest way to get to the hospital. What they do not factor in is how long the ambulance takes to arrive.

You are also assuming that everyone has a car. That is not a safe assumption.

Grin  we all know the GST rise would only go into ian's fabled 'consolidated revenue' - out of which we would see some amazingly fanciful ideas and concepts and politician pay rises, but little in the way of real infrastructure on the ground, such as Ambulance etc.

I say sling 'em on a door like they do in Syria, wrap 'em in an Australian flag, and carry them wailing and weeping through the streets to a hospital or medical centre.... set up a few emergency hospitals and invite in MSF or similar to staff 'em in true Third World style, while the Mandarins kick back and suck deeply on the public purse.

Add in that we live in a 'tame' (read beaten down with the exception of a few radicals such as my good self) society, and are TOLD (Du befehlen, Mein Fuhrer!) to call the ambulance and wait - and NOT to move the patient etc since that may cause complications.

We, as a society, have had much of our initiative removed from us by these socio-fascist concepts - such as that ONLY governments know how best to run our lives - and many of us have fallen for it as the 'easy' way out of being responsible for ourselves.

Doubts over Coalition paramedic promise for Daylesford

RACHEL AFFLICK
22 Dec, 2010 01:00 AM

THE Coalition's election promise to fund two additional paramedics to Daylesford must be implemented as soon as possible, Ambulance Employees Australia secretary Steve McGhie said.

Just days before last month's state election, Liberal candidate Ben Taylor said if the Coalition came to power, it would
increase the number of paramedics at the new ambulance station from two to four.

Ballarat East MLA Geoff Howard last Wednesday wrote to Mr Davis seeking advice about when the Coalition's commitment would be honoured

"
The former Labor Government of course built a new ambulance station
and this was done with the expectation of being able to increase the number of ambulance staff at Daylesford in the near future.

"Now, with the change of government, we want to ensure that the very clear commitment made ahead of the last election is honoured, and is honoured as quickly as possible.

"The summer period is clearly one where there can be higher visitor levels to Daylesford and Hepburn"

"The level of demand for ambulance services can also be increased and it will therefore be appropriate to ensure that at the earliest possible occasion the additional ambulance officers promised by the new government will be put in place"

But there has been no confirmation from Health Minister David Davis on when the commitment will be fulfilled.

"We will deploy these additional paramedics as they become available and based on clinical need"

Ambos unable to save Daylesford patient

ERIN WILLIAMS

AN AMBULANCE was sent from Ballan to Daylesford to respond to a fatal cardiac arrest because the local crew were unavailable.

A Daylesford man, 54, died on the Daylesford Football Oval awaiting the ambulance about 9.30am on New Year's Day.

The Daylesford ambulance crew had worked until 10pm on New Year's Eve and, according to the Ambulance Employees Association, were on a fatigue break at the time of the incident.

Ambulance Victoria Grampians regional manager Greg Leach said the ambulance service followed its normal practice of arranging Ballan to respond to Daylesford if required.

The distance between the two rural towns is almost 33 kilometres.

GST revenue goes to the States.  Any extra revenues will go towards such services as ambulance.

Would've this whinging post been necessary had the States been receiving 50% more GST revenues for the last 20 years.  Hewson wanted to introduce a 15% GST 20 years ago which was howled down by the very people now whinging about reduced Govt services.

Increased services have to be paid for and that is the issue.  Labor Govts just go into debt and Liberal Govts cut services because both are too gutless to do what is actually required.....increase taxes and charges.

One missing fact. Were these 2 dead guys black? If they are, would they have been dead if they were white?
