Printer cartidges - now they disable generics
Apr 6th, 2014 at 9:35am

Say have you noticed how the Printers are rejecting the use of generics bands now?

This has happened to me on my HP Printer. It only accepts the genuine Cartridges which cost the Earth.

Love to hear some informed comments.

Mine tries to reject refilled cartridges, even genuine ones.

There is a workaround, which I can't quite recall (long time since I refilled).

Its a Canon Pixma 520.

It all depends on whether the printer checks with a chip installed in the toner cartridge for OEM details.
Some printers won't recognise a refilled cartridge because the chip stores toner level data and that can't be reset when its refilled.
It's all down to the printer model and what cartridge type they've designed it to work with.
Canon and HP seem to have more models that require an OEM cartridge - or models that will not accept a refill.

That is how mine is, but it can be reset with a bit of faffing about.

That's with genuine, but refilled, cartridges.

Haven't tried generic cartridges in it (not game to pony-up for
them, then find that they won't work).

Scam.

You can say that again. The cost is so high it's a no-brainer that criminal price-fixing between the companies is what's ripping us off.

I tried to get bulk from China, but couldn't find a wholesaler. I might try again.

My printer is an HP, but it hasn't rejected refills or generics.

At one time I was working for an ink manufacturing company. That was before I had a PC.

It's a printer, an inanimate object. Leave it be. It won't attack you, believe me.  Grin

My HP recently decided to tell me that there was no, or non-recognisable, cartridge installed.
Genuine HP cartridges.
This was after using said cartridge on a number of occasions.

Took them out, turned off printer, turned on again and reinstalled cartridges.
Same message....not recognised.

Pulled a new set off the shelf and put them in....Problem solved.
Without turning off printer I pulled new ones out and re-installed old ones.

Worked OK, no problems.

While not the same situation as yours, red, I'm wondering if your printer program is just having a hissy fit.

Photosmart Essential 3.0 and then 3.5 have been giving me a bit of grief as well.

Yes, but only when they're at rest.

Otherwise they become very animated.

My point: all attack is conducted with inanimate objects! Everything is a weapon!!
