Is The Free Trade Deal With Japan A Dud Deal.

Dairy industry disappointed with failure to milk opportunity      Sad

Date
    April 9, 2014

Australian dairy farmers have expressed ''extreme disappointment'' over the new ''free trade'' deal with Japan, labeling it a ''dud deal'' and ''lost opportunity''.

According to figures released by the Australian Dairy Industry Council, Japan bought $511 million of Australian dairy exports in 2012-13, making it the country's biggest customer. But market access in Japan comes at a cost, with dairy exporters paying more than $100 million a year in tariffs.

The new deal, the council said, would reduce tariffs paid by dairy exporters by just $4.7 million in its first year, a figure that would rise to just $11.6 million by 2031.

''We were hopeful government had heeded the industry's message in regards to freeing up market access in Japan, however it now appears our words fell upon deaf ears,'' Robert Poole, deputy chairman of the council, said.      Sad

''There has been no movement in this agreement on fresh cheese - the number one objective for Australian dairy - with tariffs to remain at 29.8 per cent. A successful outcome on this tariff line would have delivered approximately $60 million in tariff savings. Instead, we have received nothing and the tariff stays in place.''

The president of United Dairyfarmers of Victoria, Tyran Jones, said it was ''not a particularly good deal'' for Australia's dairy industry.      Sad

''The bottom line is that in the first year the benefit is somewhere in the order of $4˝ million … which is not a meaningful amount in terms of Australian dairy trade,'' he said. ''It's just an opportunity lost. There was potential for a reduction in the cost of doing business in the dairy export sector.''

Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss said: ''There always has to be some element of give and take.

''We can't get everything that we would like. Clearly, I would like to see all agricultural trade barriers removed and that would be a huge boost to the Australian farm sector.''

Let's just say it will do more for Japan's staggering economy than it will for ours.

Having read up on Japanese economic structure, it is plain that even when the big companies look good on the world stage, the massive hidden infrastructure of small contractors etc are going to the wall - and japan has been doing it harder and harder with the rise of the Asian Pussycats.

Nothing more than a stopgap and a photo shoot opportunity, and a chance to buy more imports while still holding and even preparing the funeral over our own industries, even while the bodies are still warm.

Finger in the dyke policies.......

Free trade deal:
Government MP George Christensen
says Australia-Japan agreement has
'no significant benefit'
to farmers

Latika Bourke
Tue 8 Apr 2014

...

A Government MP has hit out at the trade deal struck by Prime Minister Tony Abbott with his Japanese counterpart yesterday, questioning the value of an agreement that does not have a "significant benefit for Australian agriculture".

Queensland Liberal National MP George Christensen, who represents the sugar-growing region of Mackay, has told the ABC he is "disappointed there has been no improvement for the sugar industry" which he says "always seems to be on the outer" when it comes to free trade agreements.

"There are some benefits for beef and horticulture in the Japan FTA," the Member for Dawson said.

"But a few sectors does not make up the entire agricultural industry.

"I appreciate that negotiating FTAs, particularly with Japan, is tricky business. But I wonder about the value of an FTA with any nation unless there's significant benefit for Australian agriculture."

Brent Finlay from the National Farmers Federation says the deal "falls short of the mark on a number of fronts" because some tariffs have been only reduced or kept in place instead of eliminated altogether.

"The agreement does not improve, or marginally improves, market access and terms of trade for a number of sectors such as dairy, sugar, grains, pork and rice," Mr Finlay said in a statement.

The hefty 38.5 per cent tariff Japan imposes on Australian beef products will be halved to 19.5 per cent for frozen beef.

The cut will be phased in over 18 years, with an 8 per cent reduction in the first year.

The duty will be higher for fresh beef, at 23.5 per cent, and the cuts will be phased in over 15 years with an immediate 6 per cent reduction in the first year.

Acting Opposition Leader Penny Wong said that was a "very long timeframe" for reductions in Japan's "very high" tariffs on beef.

Australia has won the right to export 20,000 tonnes of cheese but there has been no change to the duties which are currently imposed.

And restrictions placed on Australian imports mean any Australian cheese sold in Japan would have to mixed with Japanese cheese first, which has left the industry pessimistic about any real overall benefits.

An allegory for you:-

"General Pickett - see to your division!"

"General Lee - I have no division!"

(after Pickett's charge at Gettysburg)..

Anyone 'talking down the country' at this stage of its disaster is doing it a favour - by trying to get some message across to the fools running the show that they are ruining countless lives and livelihoods while feathering their own nests.

I think you need to get out more... all that sandwich refusal at home is making you bitter and biased...

Queensland Liberal National MP George Christensen, is one of the Coalitions own criticising the free trade deal with Japan. Until we see all the details we will not really see who benefits from this agreement!!!

Why is this story only one sided, What are we giving them out of the deal, is it a reduction in our tariffs or a removal of tariffs? And also I would like to point out if they have only reduced their tariffs then it isn't exactly free trade.

I'm a Nationalist, Not a Globalist, not a Communist, Not a Capitalist.
And I'm still not hearing any benefits.
They say we can sell more beef to Japan, I don't give a stuff who buys our beef. But will our beef prices rise due to Shortages?
They say cars will be cheaper, but that's only if I want a Japanese car.
They say Electrical goods will be cheaper such as  fridges, microwaves, stereo systems, air conditioners and dishwashers.
I already have all these items.
They say they can buy our canned goods for less, but we cant even sell them to Australian's what make one think the Japanese will buy them over other cheaper imported products?
Mineral exporters are happy to see a tariff cut of 3.2 per cent on steelmaking coal as well as a number of other minerals.
So we can still buy our own steel back at even more profits offshore.

Sorry Tony but I'm not happy with this deal, Just looks like a global version of communism.

Any business that can increase its market, and the Japanese market is huge has to benefit.

They don't last forever and what brand are the ones you have?  Chances are they are either Japanese or Korean.

Not really.  Other manufacturers will have to cut their prices to compete.  Freeing up trade promotes competition.

Simple.  Cheaper prices influence spending habits.  Lowering the price creates greater demand.

If we can't efficiently produce product at a competitive price that is our own fault so we need to shed inefficient industry and specialise in product that we have a competitive advantage at producing instead of driving it away with carbon and mining taxes.

How can freeing up trade be communism?  Protectionism, barriers to trade, collusion in labour prices are all communism.
