Nationals MP predicts backlash on age pension changes
By Jacqueline Breen

Posted Wed 16 Apr 2014
ABC News.

Broken Hill's Nationals MP John Williams says proposed changes to the age pension will face a backlash in working communities like his.

This week Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey flagged a possible rise in the eligibility age for the pension, pointing to the UK's example setting the retirement age at 70.      Sad

Indexing the pension to inflation was another idea suggested to stem the growth in welfare spending as the government prepares for the May budget.

Member for Murray-Darling John Williams says he understands the budget pressures.

But he says he worries about older Australians working longer and retaining their jobs.

"On the practical side of it I can see what the Federal Government's trying to do," he said.

"But the reality is I don't think this is in the best interests of Australians working to an age where they can enjoy a pension.

"That will always be a problem in regards to just how fit they are at that sort of age and obviously the ability to retain a job at the age.

"If you're put out of work in your 60s it'd be very hard to find another job to see you out to the end of that decade."      Sad

Pete Everuss from south Broken Hill says he's worried there'd be flow on-effects for other generations if the retirement age is raised.

Mr Everuss says keeping older people in the workforce could reduce employment opportunities for other younger Australians.

"What about all the young ones coming up that's not going to get the work?" he said.      Sad

"And they're on the dole, and they spend twice as much on the dole as what they'd be paying for pensioners.

"If they retired at 65 then the younger ones have got a chance of getting a job."

Yes that's right Mr Williams, of course there will be a backlash.  What one earth are the coalition thinking?.  Putting the pension age up to 70, is a ridiculous move, and if this is done, there will be a price to pay at the ballot box.      Sad

that all it is an IDEA...do I think Joe will touch pensions???

no I dont

but if he does then so be it..

to me its all a storm in a tea cup..

raising the age of retirement has been there for a loooooooong time..stop claiming its just happened..

it will happen but over time..you can retire when ever you like as long as you dont want or expect govt assistance isnt that the way it works???..

if you want the govt to feed you when you retire then you have to fit in with the rules...

the retirement age increased when I was working..

I dont know anymore...stop using pensioners as if they have done bugger all and only want to live high off the hog...

sure some will whinge.. enough will never be enough for them..

but sheeeze if you dont wan t to work till your 70.. start saving so you can retire early..stop whingeing.

Why isn't Mr Abbott forced to wait for a pension until he is 70 plus. Like he wants others to ?

And all this segues into the 'women retire on less super'.. how?

Surely, cods, this is your constituency based on past statements, and if indeed there is entrenched and endemic discrimination against women to reduce their super - surely you are advocating that these women need to grin and bear it, and just man up and work harder, save harder, and stop spending.

While you do have a point, Abbott shouldn't be singled out over this. All politicians receive their pension perks.

It would be a BROKEN PROMISE.

That will be a millstone around Abbott's neck until he is thrown overboard and sinks without trace at the next election. Gillard had the same trouble with the carbon price. The difference though is that Abbott wasn't forced to compromise on policy in order to form government.

I might lend half an ear to these so n so's about pensions if they'd tell the public what theirs are costing us. The last time I heard anyone quote numbers, some years ago, the total national bill for retired pollies, state and federal, was running in excess of a BILLION $ per year. Think of the savings to be made THERE.
Their pensions were originally set because pollies were generally retired men of a certain age, and weren't expected to live long. It was considered a reward for devoting themselves to the common weal. Now it's a career choice and they're retiring younger and younger, and living longer too. Most of the senior ones go on to lucrative company directorships and board member ships too, something denied to the common person.
