Where's their Smoke?

Councils push for smoke-free Aust cities

Melbourne's CBD could become smoke-free after a cigarette ban in a laneway was dubbed a success. Source: AAP

A BID to make Melbourne one of the world's first smoke-free CBDs has won some support in other Australian capitals, though even anti-smoking groups say it's unworkable.

It's a concept backed by the lord mayor of the City of Perth, where from June people can be fined $100 for smoking in city malls.

Melbourne City Councillor Richard Foster says after successfully trialling a smoking ban in a CBD lane, The Causeway, six more areas will be banned in the next financial year.

He says the final step would be a smoking ban in the CBD.

"We would be the first smoke-free city in the world," Mr Foster told reporters on Thursday.

"So, this is going to be a great example of how Melbourne can lead ... on wellbeing and on health."

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said it would be impossible to implement.

"I think it's totally unworkable. I think it's totally unreasonable," he told Fairfax Radio.

Quit Victoria and the Heart Foundation say making the CBD smoke-free would be difficult, and a statewide ban on smoking in outdoor and dining and drinking areas would be preferable.

I'm not a smoker (anymore, quit 7 yrs ago) but this is ridiculous ... we don't want them smoking inside, and now they can't smoke outside? Either ban cigarettes or leave the smokers alone. You can't have it both ways.

Likewise (2 years) and unless I'm in an enclosed area where I can't get away, I don't care who smokes or where.

Friends are still permitted to smoke at my place, even if I do not.

I am a smker, but I try to be a considerate one at all times. I never smoke in anyone else's place, not even on their property, if I must I go out on the street, if it's raining then I don't light up at all.
I don't smoke near anyone, anywhere, and I won't anywhere there's children, I don't even smoke in my own car.

Admittedly, the main reason I'm so considerate is that it cuts down on my smoking, a lot, as well as keeping it friendly.  Wink

I've literally tried everything to give up, hypno, acupuncture, cold turkey, gum, patches, you name it, I've tried it, all to no avail.
I read somewhere a Doc claimed that if you were addicted during puberty then giving up was virtually impossible. I don't know if that's true but it certainly seems so, I started at 9. Shocked

As for Melbourne, they can go ahead, I think it's crazy and almost unenforceable but so what?

good god man.. get a grip..

if you haven't given up yet its because you don't really want to ...

career smokers rarely give up... they are hooked... they don't really want to..

a workmate of the mrs recently had a biopsy on a lump in her brain... turns out it is secondary cancer/tumour... a cancer caused by the main cancer in her body which was lung cancer...

so... you know.. enjoy the rest of your life while you can...

You have no idea how boring such sanctimonious simplistic declarations get after a while.  Roll Eyes

I'm not going to try defending my addiction, I hate it and would gladly be rid of it if I could, so don't bother preaching to me, it's all been said and done a hundred times before.
I've already had run-ins with cancer,( skin, bone, and a benign lump in my foot), all non smoking related, and I've lived a full life anyway, on top of my disabilities, so smoking killing me isn't much of a problem for me, unfortunate but true.
Emphysema scares me, but no sign of that yet, thankfully, and I'll cross that bridge if I ever come to it.
Still trying to give up every day though, I fight myself before every ciggy and don't buy more after running out until I'm climbing the walls, I'm hoping I'll somehow wean myself off that way, it's all I've got left to try.

Smokers who refuse to give up should  legally be unable to access medical resources afforded the rest of us. I support peoples right to smoke,  I do not support and resent my taxes being paid to support these drug addicts.

So you contend that if a smoker is hit by a car they should be left to die on the road?

and thats it in a nutshell ...... I struggled to give up many times, smoked since 13 .... the day i proposed to my wife she agreed on the proviso that I quit smoking ... I promise i would and I've always been the sort to keep my word .... I was determined I would  ... spend $200 on patches, tubes, nicotine capsules, gum etc in preparation for it, I didn't even end up opening the packaging for most of it, threw it all in the bin 3 months later

in the end the only thing i used was an empty tube and it turned out to be pretty easy ... the only difference was that this time I wasn't doing it because someone told me to, i was doing it because I wanted to

I do not support my taxes being used for your hospital bill when some smoker knocks you out .....

I have been knocked out 3 times. None of these by a smoker. I don t think  my taxes should pay for your AIDS medication either.
