Agree 100%.

For the last few months I have spent everyday visiting several hospitals in Perth (very ill, elderly parents).

Despite signs saying that the grounds of the hospital are smoke-free, there are patients hooked up to drips and smoking all over the place.

I've made complaints to the two major public hospitals (SCGH and RPH), however, they aren't interested in stopping the practice.

In a way, I can see why they are reluctant.  If you mention (quite politely) to these patients that they are not permitted to smoke on the grounds of the hospital, they usually get quite aggressive and unleash a barrage of swearing and abuse.

Hospital staff have to deal with enough abuse from patients, so I understand why they don't want to expose themselves to more of it from these retarded drug addicts.

I still say that if you're caught going outside for a smoke while you're a patient at a public hospital, you should be refused re-entry.

If you don't want to help yourself, stop wasting other people's time.

Yes, my pet hate. I visit these hospitals every now and then. They are actually breaking the law by allowing them to smoke at the entrances, I agree about the abuse the staff take from some of these low lifes. The worst are the methheads.

Please don’t smoke near me whilst out doors…..you’re ruining my poisoning from the traffic's exhaust.

There's no traffic in outdoor pedestrian malls (where smoking is banned in Perth and Hobart).

And ...

"People who smoke cigarettes are pumping out 10 times more toxic air than cars, say experts.

"Tobacco smoke produced far more fine particulate matter - the element of air pollution most dangerous for health - than diesel exhaust."

I'd have no problem if they banned cars from the CBD too.

Possibly true on a one to one basis. But there are a lot more motor vehicles than smokers.

I am a smker, but I try to be a considerate one at all times. I never smoke in anyone else's place, not even on their property, if I must I go out on the street, if it's raining then I don't light up at all.
I don't smoke near anyone, anywhere, and I won't anywhere there's children, I don't even smoke in my own car.

Admittedly, the main reason I'm so considerate is that it cuts down on my smoking, a lot, as well as keeping it friendly.  Wink

I've literally tried everything to give up, hypno, acupuncture, cold turkey, gum, patches, you name it, I've tried it, all to no avail.
I read somewhere a Doc claimed that if you were addicted during puberty then giving up was virtually impossible. I don't know if that's true but it certainly seems so, I started at 9. Shocked

As for Melbourne, they can go ahead, I think it's crazy and almost unenforceable but so what?

good god man.. get a grip..

if you haven't given up yet its because you don't really want to ...

career smokers rarely give up... they are hooked... they don't really want to..

a workmate of the mrs recently had a biopsy on a lump in her brain... turns out it is secondary cancer/tumour... a cancer caused by the main cancer in her body which was lung cancer...

so... you know.. enjoy the rest of your life while you can...

You have no idea how boring such sanctimonious simplistic declarations get after a while.  Roll Eyes

I'm not going to try defending my addiction, I hate it and would gladly be rid of it if I could, so don't bother preaching to me, it's all been said and done a hundred times before.
I've already had run-ins with cancer,( skin, bone, and a benign lump in my foot), all non smoking related, and I've lived a full life anyway, on top of my disabilities, so smoking killing me isn't much of a problem for me, unfortunate but true.
Emphysema scares me, but no sign of that yet, thankfully, and I'll cross that bridge if I ever come to it.
Still trying to give up every day though, I fight myself before every ciggy and don't buy more after running out until I'm climbing the walls, I'm hoping I'll somehow wean myself off that way, it's all I've got left to try.

There's an ad on tv, "Nicorette, nicorette, you can beat the cigarette" and it's a spray for when you feel the urge to smoke, have you tried that yet?
Also, there are those e-ciggies, seems to have a good effect to help some rid the smoking habit, I have seen this with my daughter's friends, pleased to say.

I agree, my father was all for that, 20 years ago in Sydney

There's an even better method than that:

don't buy any more cigarettes;

don't accept cigarettes from anyone else; and

stop putting cigarettes in your mouth and lighting them.

As a way of stopping smoking, this has a 100% success rate.

I'll go sit in the car and smoke for an hour.

You go hook up your exhaust and sit in the car for an hour.

We'll compare notes afterwards...

NOTE: Please write your notes clearly (and really smacking fast!!! lol)
