Why are internet pages so large in Mega Bytes?
May 29th, 2014 at 9:56pm

I wondered why it took so long to download one page on CNN.

When tested on ping.com  the page size is 8 M Bytes!

My connection has been slow lately so it was taking sometimes 15 to 20 seconds to download one page.

Why do they make the pages so large?
The story & say one picture would only be about 200K in size but
they add a whole lot of rubbish that you don't want to see.

Can anyone tell me why?

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Bad graphics compression is one reason. Ever since connection speeds have improved they throw caution to the wind. Also the smart ad images might be flash images which are essentially code which is larger again and they can report metrics back to other sites creating more traffic. Then there are the ads holding everything up which come from other sites again. One page can average 30 -60 connections its ludicrous.

Lots of images and video.

I think a lot of sites are designed by software that is a bit like MS word - the result is simple, but there are pages and pages of code behind it.

For the non-interactive parts of this site, I wrote all the code myself. I think that has contributed to a lot of them topping the google results.

Yes - thanks FD
I have recently noticed it due to a possible fault with my internet connection.
It could be caused by water on the phone lines.

Last night I was down to 0.3 Mbs
Today I have 0.7 Mbs.
When I was first connected many years ago I was getting 3.2 Mbs.

I am getting sick & tired of Optus &
the giant web pages are not helping.

Imagine the costs for people with lousy mobile phone plans where they pay for every Megabyte downloaded?

If you download the add in "Adblock",it negates all these cumbersome adds and the page will load quicker.I use firefox but I'm sure other browsers have it as an add on.

My firefox adblock has stopped working lately.

About the wet weather - my theory is that you simply get more people online when it is raining.

The size of a page depends on the amount of stuff coders pack into them.

The more the page contains, the bigger it is.

If viewed as code (open a page, then use your browser menu to 'view source'
or 'View source code) it can be seen that a web page is basically a document
written in HTML code. In fact, you can write a working web-page in Windows
Notepad. I've done so.

And, just like a Word document, the more you put in it, the bigger it is.

Apologies to Optus.

I am now getting:

Quote:
Mirror: Optus
Data: 2 MB
Test Time: 10.01 secs

Your line speed is 1.57 Mbps (1572 kbps).
Your download speed is 197 KB/s (0.19 MB/s).

The problem was a bad connection in the wall where 2 wires
had been twisted together by a security installer 10 years ago.
I fixed it.

Still - my speed is only half that of what I had many years ago.

I use firefox - it loads faster than IE 11.

I don't know about Adblock?

It could be so.
Still I saw Telstra pumping out a phone pit full of water 2 days ago.

Stuff the internet sites.
They should make the pages as small as possible.
