You're the first one to say that. I've had people telling me how wonderful Linux is.

So okay ~ I'll steer clear of it.

I'm told that Mac is virtually fool-proof against viruses.

I'll be doing my own 'clean install' in the hope of exterminating whatever it is that is slowing my other computer to a frustrating crawl.

I've done 'clean installs' before with my WindowsXP ~ but this will be the first time with my new computer and its Windows 7 Home Premium.

I can't afford to spend over $100 at the shop to have them do it for me.

Herb, just wondering what you mainly use your computer for?

Porn.

Whoaa! Sorry! My damn Firefox auto-spellcheck's out of order again!

Pawn shops of course. Looking for bargains and collector's items.  Roll Eyes

(Even BlindFreddy could see that coming).

If it's mainly web browsing and/or word processing, may I recommend trying a linux live cd?

'Live' CD? Croikey, I've never heard of it. I'm not a Luddite, but I am severely challenged when it comes to the details of techno stuff.

I only browse the net for news and entertainment purposes.

It's a good way to get in and recover all your stuff that you want to keep before you wipe the hard drive with your re-install. Plus, it gives you a go with something a whole load more secure than windows. I had a similar problem about a year ago, so I used a linux live cd to get my junk off my computer for a new install. I ended up liking it so much that I now dual boot it with Windows.

I have my #1 PC backed up to an external hdd ~ and my #2 PC backed up to a second external hdd ... (WinXp and Win7).

BlindFreddy wrote on Jun 16th, 2014 at 10:05pm:
Try it - download the ISO, burn it to a cd, boot from the cd. Then, you can copy your important files to a usb/whatever. When you're done, either reset, take the disk out, and boot normally into windows (with the same problems) or install linux to your hard drive so the problems are gone for good. Either way, no risk, good reward.

And the best part? It's 100% free (as in, free to use and free to modify) and supported by an active community. If you're interested, links to the ISOs are here. Not sure if you're a 32 or 64 bit system. If you're not sure, use the 32 bit - that'll work on either.

Here's a page full of download mirrors: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2626

Or, if you don't want to have to think for yourself, here's a link to the file: http://mirror.optus.net/linuxmint/isos//stable/17/linuxmint-17-cinnamon-dvd-32bi...

As it says on the link, it's linux mint 17 cinnamon (my personal favourite) 32 bit. It's about a 1.2GB download, but well worth it IMHO.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for all that info, Freddy. I'll make a note of it to my files for future reference.

My Win7 is a 64bit job .. the XP is 32.

I'm not confident I can restore my stuff back onto my cleaned hard drive from my new external hdd. I've had lousy experiences with Backup programs. The best I ever had was Acronis ~ but then something went wrong with it and it wouldn't work any more.

I'm not surprised - unless you're a techie kinda guy, you're unlikely to really think about such things. Basically, a "live" cd loads an operating system (OS) from the cd instead of the hard drive. That way, if you've lost windows on your hard drive, you can still still get into your computer. AFIK, computer shops and the like use live cds (souped up ones) when doing data recovery. And they charge for it Wink

Steps are basically:
1. Download the ISO
2. Burn to cd
3. Put cd in drive
4. Restart computer
5. Watch in awe as it boots from the cd and lets you get to your stuff Smiley

As for backup software, one of the best I've encountered is called FreeFileSync. It runs on everything, is super fast and accurate, and I reckon even a luddite could use it Smiley It won't help with data recovery (which I think is what you want), but as for backing your stuff up, it's great. Set it up, then run every couple of days. It lets me mirror work between my laptop, backup hdd and usb, keeping the most recent version of a document and copying it between the three. Just great.

Here's a link.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/

Oh, as for restoring from your external hdd, if it's just documents, it's generally as simple as:
1. Open up hdd, find where your stuff is
2. Right click, click "copy".
3. Go find where you want your stuff to go
4. Right click, click "paste".

As for this chap, I'd be interested to know how long ago his experience was, and which "distro" it was. I doubt it was Mint - any of the recent ones, say from 14 upwards - which was made with non-tach people in mind.

This is true. It's built from the same "stuff" as linux generally, but it's locked down to be idiot-proof.
Good luck!

I had no problems yesterday and when I logged on today the Forum page opened almost instantly.

Then, 4 intrusion notices from Norton.
That was sorted out by them and PC shut-down and restarted.

On restart, home page came up straight away but Ozpol was slow.
I persisted for a while then gave up as a bad joke.

Have just logged back on and Ozpol is still slow.
Other sites appear to be OK.

Seems to have turned to crap again.....

The earlier 4 attempted intrusions have me a bit worried, seeing as they hit just after the Forum page opened.

Think I'll come back tomorrow.

If you do a clean install, do your windows updates immediately. Allow up to a day for this. Then install your anti-virus and update it also. (Note that anti-virus may prevent windows update from working properly.)

Windows 7 may have an internal partition that allows you to do a clean install without CDs etc.

If you don't fell tech-savvy using windows, you have no chance using linux. Linux is for people who think windows isn't tech savvy enough for them.
