Should the Coalition abandon the mining subsidy ?
Jul 4th, 2014 at 9:40pm

Well they dropped the mining tax and they are about the drop the carbon tax. With that being the case, is there really any need to keep propping up an already profitable industry ?
Should the 4.5 billion be spent on something that will actually benefit Australians and not the foreign investers and shareholders ?

if the govt. is going to go out on a platform of 'we are not in the business of propping up private businesses', then it should apply across the board .... not just to those that don't donate to the liberal party

So, if the Mining Industry is such a good money spinner, why do they need subsidies at all?

What are they going to do if we stop paying them, pack up their mines and go home?  Grin
Hardly.

In the extremely unlikely event that they shut down the mines here what do we actually lose? A few thousand mining jobs but what else? A few support services that mostly import rather than produce anything here, and employ very few Aussies?
Roll Eyes

Both sides of politics were comfortable shutting down the automotive industry, and the hundreds of support and supply companies that lived off it, so why do they balk at applying the same approach to mining?

Quoted for truth!

The mining subsidies provide stimulation to the sector of the economy that is least in need of it. They contribute to the "two speed" economy. This causes problems for the rest of the economy through interest rates that are higher than they need to be, thus increasing the value of the Australian dollar, and making the rest of the economy sluggish.

Another industry that receives wasteful subsidies is the private health insurance industry.

There cannot be any real justification in retaining these subsidies.

The mining industry is as old as British settlement in this country so why would it need subsidising?
Crikey..its not like its a modern fledgling industry that's in need of govt support to get started.
