Indonesia arrests Australia-bound asylum seekers

Indonesia arrested 43 Afghans who were trying to reach Australia illegally, police said, a day after Asian nations pledged to work together to tackle people smuggling.

The migrants, including women and children, were arrested in the waters off Madura island in East Java province on Thursday morning, provincial maritime police chief Anang Hidayat told reporters.

"They were seeking asylum in Australia. They were arrested while they were transferring boats. They had no identification documents," he said.

The group had flown from Afghanistan to Jakarta, travelled by bus to Madura island to "take a big boat to Australia", Mr Hidayat said.

"We've handed the case over to the immigration department and International Organisation for Migration to handle."

22 pages of argument over whether or not people who claim or rather attempt to claim Asylum are genuine or not.

How can we know?  The Government ceased processing their claims properly way back in mid-2012!   Some people here seem to believe that granting Asylum should be the subject to a popularity contest, rather than the actual needs of people who are so desperate and so fed up waiting for the UN to process their claims that they're willing to risk their lives getting on a leaky boat.  Yet they ignore the ten times the number of Asylum Seekers who arrive by plane!

Truly some people are insane.   Grin Grin Cheesy Cheesy Grin Grin

BEING "fed up waiting' is acknowledgment that they jump the queue. I'd rather the ones who were more patient come to Australia.

Not according to the migration act which governs how we execute our obligations to the refugee convention.

Sorry friYAY, if you want it to be illegal you'll need to have the migration act changed Wink
Does it really? Show this.

you've been shown many times.  Ignorance is not an excuse to constantly ask for the same thing over and over again Smiley

Indonesian police have arrested more asylum seekers in the past year, but the increase in arrests more likely reflects an overall rise in the number of asylum seekers coming to Indonesia rather than greater police effectiveness. From January 2012 until September 2013, the Indonesian police arrested about 12,790 ‘irregular migrants’ (police statics do not differentiate between registered asylum seekers, recognised refugees and undocumented migrants) either while entering the country or, more often, while attempting to leave.

Correct, and it is illegal to pay people smugglers to do so.

100% incorrect.

It is not illegal to pay people smugglers.

Keep searching for the piece of legislation if you like, though.

Tell me when you find it   Grin

And where in the migration act does it say that this highlighted part would preclude the asylum seekers as arriving illegally?

Thanks for playing? Grin

It's not illegal.

I can assure you.

we do\nt need your assurance, just facts. Paying people smugglers is most defintiley 100 percent illegal.

100% wrong.

Start searching for the piece of legislation that supports your ridiculous claim.

I'll be here, waiting ...

I suppose you're aware you rarely put your own argument and the majority of your posts are schoolyard retorts.
Hardly impressive.

I'm putting forward my argument right here:

It is not illegal to pay people smugglers for transport in a boat to Australia.

They are not arrested for "paying people smugglers".

It is not illegal to pay people smugglers.

Still looking for the legislation?

Let me know when you find it.

Paying people smugglers for transport on a boat = not illegal.

People who go to a point of entry and request asylum have not really entered, people get turned back from a point of entry or denied access.

Boat people attempt to get to a point of entry and request asylum. This is in fact a legal process.
