Formula E is taking over the world that turns...
Jul 9th, 2014 at 2:25am

...

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jul/07/-sp-formula-e-electric-car-ra...

..
“There is a need for motor sport to be relevant,” says Formula E chief executive, Alejandro Agag, at the Donington trackside during the first public testing sessions last week. He claims lofty ambitions for the zero-emission race series: to make electric cars sexy, accelerate improvements in the technology and tackle city-choking air pollution and, ultimately, climate change. Agag, like most of those involved, have roots in Formula One and are reluctant to criticise the brash, gas-guzzling F1 circus seen by some as an eco-horror show.

now- here is some quantum era weirdness,

...

In the first year, the drivers will all have the same car, created by Spark, McLaren, Williams and Renault. After that teams will be able to make their own improvements. But tight rules mean this has to focus on the battery and drive train, the areas with the most relevance for road cars rather than, for example, the aerodynamic shape which F1 teams spend millions on improving. This also means the cost of running a Formula E team is likely to be about £3m rather than the £200m for an F1 team.

Bird says the key to winning Formula E will be managing the battery: “The driver that can make the battery last whilst being fast will be the guy or girl at the front at the end. We will have to think very strategically. But having “push to pass” means it is also definitely going to be easier to overtake.”

..

like wtf?  Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked  Wink Wink Cheesy Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Cool

Well, first Tesla Motors released all their patents for free use, now someone has apparently set up an all electrice racing circuit. Now all we need is a large-scale, sustainable electrical generation method (coughcoughNUCLEARcoughcough), and maybe we can make some headway towards telling every oil producer on the planet to go f*ck themselves with a rake.

What I'd like to know is if the Formula E cars can out accelerate their Formula 1 cousins. I know a Tesla Roadster can pull 0-60mph in 3.9s, which is only .8s slower than a 2013 Chevy C6 ZR-1 Corvette. I've also seen all-electric drag bikes that can go 0-250mph+ in less than 4s, so I'd love to see the specs for an all-electric formula car.

I'm also betting Sebastian Vettel would still be a ginormous douchebag in this circuit too, if he drives in it.

Very interesting question of course because there must be a cut off point where the battery gets too heavy... which is why they say electric passenger planes will never happen!

It's the very touchstone of the limits of the technology: where bikes can out accelerate their fossil fooled cousins but the cars can't: yes, we all want to know exactly that  Wink

Also, the incentive to produce mass solar and renewables will be helped by the above initiative: THIS IS DISINVESTMENT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE... DISINVESTMENT RULES THE WORLD!

in other news:

BMW and Daimler have announced a collaboration to develop an inductive charging system that will work with both companies’ electrified cars.

The standardised system to be developed by the two German luxury car makers will be able to charge full electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles without the need for those cars to be physically plugged into a power source.

Instead, there’s a charging plate located on the ground, while on the underside of the front of the car is a receiving plate. To charge the car all the driver has to do is position the car’s plate over the ground plate, and press a button on the dash.

Now, as regards "a maximum speed of 225 kilometres per hour."

This is the most curious aspect: how can a competition be speed limited when this is generally reserved for safety regulations regarding the health of the voting citizen in democratic society!???!

Cheesy Cheesy It's a very curious thing this formula e no matter how you slice and dice it: paradigm change much  Shocked Shocked

Solar's a dead-end technology that simply isn't up to the task. It's good as a supplemental power source, but nothing more.

Rubbish - you should have seen the 7.30 report on ABC1 tonight.

The power companies are worried about people who
have solar panels & batteries - they don't even need to
connect to the power grid.

The $50 billion spent on power lines & infrastructure will therefore be harder to pay back.

Rubbish, I have a solar system and generate far more power than I consume, next generation solar systems are even more efficient. The issue is the power distrbution network.

Only regulation can make it dead end technology! Isn't it funny how that is exactly what makes pollution profitable  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

No, the laws of phsics make it a dead-end technology. You have X amount of space and Y amount of cars. You also have A amount of ground spac for your solar cells and at least 2X the draw.

Solve for smacking X. Then you will have done wha none before you have.
