Yeah, in fact think that's what they were doing with citrus fruits around Mildura a few years back, and, we couldn't compete with import stone fruits and other stuff from California. Which ain't the beez kneez .. considering those were our bees not asleep on their watch so to speak.

One thing that escapes you all. Australian food is much higher standard than most other countries.
Over here, in the US, the soils are worked out - impoverished. To many imported weeds, bugs, fungus's. Nothing grows here without sprays of fungicide, insecticide, herbicide and whatever.
You would pay a very high premium here for the quality of Australian fruit and vegetables.

I cant really agree with that statement. (Unless I am getting it back to front)

Australian soils are quite ancient and impoverished as far as nutrients go.

We have our fair share of pests and diseases, but probably not as bad as it could be.

It is our wage structure that makes it hard to turn a profit in horticultural crops. (labour intensive)

Our broad acre farmers are the most efficient in terms of labour just about anywhere.

You can get really cheap food in Mexico. But it is beans and rice. It tastes great, because the labour is so cheap they can afford the time to turn it into something good. We could have that too, if only we were willing to work for 50c a day.

Salmon is actually relatively cheap in the US. Most other things are similar in price, or more expensive.

Most of our food prices are dictated by the global market, whether it is grown here or overseas. We are a net food exporter, despite our very high wages - what does that tell you?

beans $8 a kilo in ACT...runner beans that is..I only buy fresh...but not at that price..

if we boycotted things when they go from $4 to $8 in a matter of 24 hours...things might change.

I saw a man sorting through a box of cherries yesterday $12 a kilo.. and he turned everyone over made me feel ill..I was glad I couldnt afford them...

I look at every price before I buy.....but I dont think thats a bad thing...

its time we got some respect for money and spent more wisely.

Yes stuff would become unavailable in the long run.

Those spikes in prices are the only thing that keeps many growers afloat.

You can buy Australian milk in China, both fresh and long life.

Australian milk costs up to $9 a litre in China.

It sells well. Why? Because it is a quality product. China had a quarter of a million babies made very sick due to adulterated Chinese milk, so Chinese consumers are quite willing to pay for the best. In China, that is Australian products.

It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it's the parts that I do understand.
