THE most senior Victorian Nationals’ MP has savaged the Liberal Party’s decision to mount another three-cornered contest, openly accusing the state administration of breaching the Coalition agreement.
Victorian Deputy Premier Peter Ryan today said the Liberal Party had ignored the facts of the Coalition agreement by running a candidate in the rural state seat of Euroa.
Mr Ryan said the decision was a rerun of the three-cornered contest in the rural federal seat of Mallee, which led to open warfare between the parties.
“Indeed, we have asked the Liberal Party not to stand,’’ he said.
Mr Ryan also said it was a "most unfortunate decision’’ and questioned the need for having an agreement when the Coalition parties were competing against each other.
"The very basis and foundation for having a Coalition agreement is to ensure we don’t see this sort of waste of resources occur,’’ he said.
"We saw this all happen in the recent federal election in the seat of Mallee. And here we go again.’’
His comments are significant because Mr Ryan traditionally falls on the side of playing down any differences between the two parties.
