A former federal Labor MP has been uncovered as a secret KGB informant, according to newly-released Russian intelligence archives.

Albert James, the member for Hunter in NSW, was an active informer in the 1960s and 1970s under the not-very-secure codename "Albert" — although it has not been revealed what information Mr James may have passed to the Soviet Union, Fairfax Media reports.

His status as a KGB mole is documented in the papers of Vasili Mitrokhin, a former KGB archivist and defector.

The Churchill College Archive in the United Kingdom released the papers last month.

Mr James, who served in Federal Parliament from 1960 to 1980, was known to be a strong critic of the Vietnam War and what he called "USA imperialism". He was also a supporter of Fidel Castro’s communist regime.

He died in 2006, aged 92.

Good job Longy and keep up the good work flushing out all those commies. (pssst I know why you hate them so. Cause Marx was right. Religion is the opium of the people and has caused more deaths and misery then any other ideology and institution known to man and your fanatical lunacy is threatening to plunge the world in yet another holy war.  Time we kicked the habit and flushed this opium down the toilet where it belongs.

so you are okay with having spies for foreign countries in our parliament? especially spies from countries that at the time were invading other countries?
It comes as absolutely no surprise to me that there have been spies all over this country for half a century. In fact I seem to recall you justifying Aust spying on Indonesia "because everybody does it and they should have known that" (I think accurately paraphrases what you contended at the time).  But one thing I feel reasonably confident about.  There have been many more US spies and Australian politicians (mainly liberal) acting for US spies then any other spies in this country and often they have worked against the interests of the average Australian to further the interests of American and against the interests of Australians.

Makes me wonder how many secrets Abbott is slipping out to his beloved England in hope of getting a Knighthood when he goes back home!

I doubt this guy could have given over much of any use to the RUssians. He was never a minister so had no portfolio. He seems to have just been a long term back bencher with no real influence.

it is a huge difference for us to be spying ON another country and to be spying FOR another country.

but way to go supporting a KGB mole spying on our country.  is there anything you will condemn from the left?

to see how many lefties here will condemn an Australian MP spying for the soviets. to date, the list is rather short with most supporting it.

its just like the MH17 thread and about exposing what lefties on here REALLY think.  to date they have supported Putin and the jihadists in Iraq and now a soviet mole in parliament.

not real impressive, is it?

And he's been dead for 8 years. I don't see the real need to confect/invent outrage about this.

We weren't at war with the Soviet Union.   Nor were we at war with North Vietnam.   Your point is nonsense.

Your penchant for being cryptic when backed into a corner is in high gear I see. You might want to explain this "huge difference" you speak of and how it fits in with your point, particularly when its perfectly possible to be spying on another country and for another country at the same time.

He would have been recruited by various means because he had the potential to have influence or access.  Standard old sov approach which was scattergun.  Recruit as many as you can usually via university's, debating clubs, literary clubs etc and hope some amount so something.

MICE. Money, ideology, compromise, ego, the elements of recruitment.
