The act of a lunatic': Islamic State jihadist Khaled Sharrouf's photograph of son holding severed head in Syria condemned by Muslim leader, Federal Government

An Australian jihadist who reportedly posted a picture of his seven-year-old son holding a severed head on social media has been condemned as a "lunatic" by a Muslim community leader.

The image, published today by News Corp, reportedly came from the Twitter feed of Australian Khaled Sharrouf, who calls himself an Islamic State fighter.

It shows a young boy, reported to be Sharrouf's seven-year-old son, holding the severed head of what is said to be a Syrian government soldier.

News Corp says the photo of the boy, believed to have been raised in Sydney, was posted with the caption: "That's my boy".

Lebanese Muslim Association president Samier Dandan says he is very disturbed by the image, and has distanced the Australian Muslim community from it.

"I stand very far from that concept - this is an act of a lunatic," he said.

"Even if you are saying to me he made his son lift or carry and take a picture with a decapitated head this is something reflective of something we can all agree - this is an act of a lunatic."

Defence Minister David Johnston, who has not ruled out Australian involvement in military action against the Islamic State, says he is "revolted" by the image, which he called "a shocking misrepresentation of Islam".

"It underscores the importance of the terrorism laws we are seeking to enact," he said.

"I'm very upset about this sort of thing completely colouring our view of Muslims. I think anybody who knows and understands the Muslim community, they are, by far, very peace-loving."

New South Wales Police last month issued warrants seeking the immediate arrest of Sharrouf after he posted photographs online of fellow Sydney fighter, Mohamed Elomar, holding the severed heads of Syrian government soldiers.
