Would more sanctions on Russia only hurt Australia
Aug 11th, 2014 at 6:40pm

Would tougher sanctions on Russia only further hurt the Australian economy?

One of our main export industries took a tough kick after counter-sanctions by Russia. What we saw is what countries in EU are feeling,  the sanctions hurt us more than Russia. Even before counter-sanctions,  EU was very disadvantaged by imposing sanctions on Russia.

I have a theory as to why further sanctions are a very bad idea for Australia,  but I would like to see your poll votes first before I lay it out.

The sanctions are a bad idea in the long term generally. It will force Russia to develop closer links to China and other nations meaning that economic influence over Russia will decline at a faster rate.

The technology blocks will only encourage Russia and it's trading partners to develop the technology themselves. It will slow them down, but in the long term make them more resilient.

Well said.

Australia placing sanctions on Russia is an entirely self-defeating exercise, and has absolutely no hope of shifting Russian policy. The more pressure, the more stubborn Putin will be.

It's a futile gesture that may earn Abbott some weak applause from a couple of international political bodies, but ultimately it's just a yapping chihuahua next to the Russian bear.

Russia will get its butt kicked by China if it becomes 'Pro-European' like the Ukraine is.
Not only did Russia become the Soviet Union (USSR)
to help kick the Yellow Race out of Asia via
a Default 'Cold War' with the USA based upon some
Jewish pushed Taoism of the entire Northern Hemisphere being 'all-white'.

Such stupidity eh Wink
And you thought the NAZI 'master plan' was bad  Tongue

Now because the USSR-USA 'default' War failed in its attempt to oust the
Yellow
people from Asia
(you can quote Gen Macarthur )
China is brewing like a Supernova.
Especially when the Chinese Military knows that its Economy will replace it as industry of 'importance' soon.

So after folding on its Communist ways to become Capitalist
- a slap in the face for China.
If Russia turns its 'back' upon China and becomes Pro-European? Expect ....
WAR

China will invade a 'rusted' Russia who has crumbled into Mafia gangs and the President known as Ras-Putin will run like a coward, rather than run for another term in power.
China will overwhelm Russia and although North Korea will bring the USA into the fray. China will take most of Siberia (for keeps) and
Yellow
Asia will finally have good access to the north into the Arctic.
Good timing because the black Melanesians attack Indonesia and push em '
Yellows'
back across the Wallace line into Malaysia.

So ends the Jewish dream of Taoism: for people who can only see in Black & White.  Roll Eyes

...Adam (North America) said unto God (Europe)
"Lilith (Asia) will not serve under me!"
So God (Europe) created Eve (Australia) for Adam (North America) to serve 'Down Under' him.
Eve (Australia) listened to the Rainbow Serpent (Aboriginalism) in her Garden who spoke with the voice of Lucifer (Africa) to eat from the Tree of Knowledge.

...anyway, Besides Mother Russia trying to give her boy 'Adam' (North America) her love for want of Lilith's (Asia's) rejection.
Its a happy ending when Lilith (Asia) finds her man Lucifer (Africa) - true love.  Wink

There is growing dissent in the EU over policies that led to a de fact trade war with Russia. Meanwhile the countries not toeing the line are reaping the benefits, irritating those who jumped on the sanctions bandwagon.

China to start direct sales of fruit and vegetables to Russia

Poland asks US to buy apples banned by Russia

Greek members of the European Parliament demanded Sunday that the EU cancel sanctions against Russia. MEPs Kostantinos Papadakis and Sotiris Zarianopoulos said in a letter to some senior EU officials that Russia’s ban on food import from the EU, which was Moscow’s response to anti-Russian sanctions, was ruinous to Greek agriculture.

“Thousands of small- and middle-sized Greek farms producing fruit and vegetables and selling them primarily to the Russian market have been hit hard now as their unsold products are now rotting at warehouses,” the letter said.

The MEPs are representing the Communist Party of Greece and blame the EU leaders and their own government for supporting what they called “an imperialist intervention by the US, the EU and NATO” in Ukraine at the expense of good relations with Russia.

Greece is one of the EU members hit hardest by the Russian import ban, partially due to its economy still being in turmoil. Greek farmers stand to lose an estimated 200 million euro in direct damages due to Russia’s move, with more long-term consequences expected even if year-long ban is not renewed on expiry. The producers may find it very hard to win back the market share they had before the ban as non-affected countries would certainly weight in.

perhaps you forget the COld War technology sanctions that let USSR to develop its own technology and the pitiful standard of much of it. Computer technology decades behind, military hardware that was unreliable and poorly performing. Even its much-vaunted (and unproven) ICBMs were later revealed to have such inaccurate guidance systems that hitting the right COUNTRY would have been difficult, nevermind the right city or smaller target.

technology sanctions hurt Russia as they have a poor record in technology development. Do you ever go into an electronics or computer store and drool over the latest Russian hardware and software?? nope. no one else does either.

perhaps you should ask yourself the question of why Russia is fighting back if sanctions have been so ineffective?  You also need to remember that this is a vast country with a proven inability to feed itself.  it needs us at least as much as we need them and perhaps more so.

Grin

Be careful what you wish for. The Russian mafia controls the Russian brides racket, and once they have one of their girls married off to you, it's then that they move in and relieve you of your home and property under our own piss-weak divorce laws in which 'Irreconcilable differences' is enough to toss you out onto the street.

There have been articles written about it in our Sydney papers.

'Russian brides'? ~ Buyer Beware!

As for the Filipina Mail Order brides ~ I think they serve a useful purpose in keeping our paedophiles off the streets and away from the school grounds.

Their small and childlike stature, and immature-looking bodies makes them an ideal substitute for paedos looking for a bit of schoolgirl action.

..will Russia and China trust each other...not bloody likely .. far too close for comfort...

and CHina has a bigger army than Russia and are far more advanced...and they are both land hungry...

we are lucky we are girt by sea... it protects us from our enemies marshalling their armies on our borders..

its time the West stood up to these bullies who think they can ride roughshod over everyone because their are more of them...I hate bullies...so am all for sending them a message..

and the message is being felt.  Russia has a teetering economy and is perennially unable to feed itself and is a technological dud.  it needs the west's goods more than we need to sell them. Its oil and gas exports are the true fly in the ointment as Europe has become dependant on it. But at the same time, Russia has become dependant on the hard currency it generates.

Sanctions on Russia......?

Please pardon my lack of hysteria, but WHY......????

Would all those screaming for sanctions on Russia please stand up.

Now, please outline your iron clad case for the need for sanctions.....

And please don't tell me it's because they were involved in bringing MH 17 down!
