Since 1974 studies have shown that cannabis has anti-tumor effects. The results of the 1974 study, reported in an Aug. 18, 1974, Washington Post newspaper feature, were that cannabis’s component, THC, “slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent.” In 1975 an article in the Journal of the National cancer institute titled “Antineoplastic Activity of Cannabinoids,” they reported that “Lewis lung adenocarcinoma growth was retarded by the oral administration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD). Mice treated for 20 consecutive days with THC and CBD had reduced primary tumor size.”

In 1998, a research team at Madrid’s Complutense University Led by Dr. Manuel Guzman discovered that THC can selectively induce programmed cell death in brain tumor cells without negatively impacting surrounding healthy cells. They reported in the March 2002 issue of “Nature Medicine” they had destroyed incurable brain cancer tumors in rats by injecting them with THC. And in 2007 even Harvard Researchers found that compounds in cannabis cut the growth of lung cancer. There is also an organization called The SETH Group that showed compounds in cannabis can stop the growth of human glioblastoma multiforma (GBM) brain cancer cells. The SETH Group says “No chemotherapy can match this nontoxic anti-cancer action.” Even last year in 2012 a pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco found THC stops metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer.

Some Queensland doctors could be prescribing medicinal cannabis to patients from as early as next month, the State Government says.

Health Minister Cameron Dick introduced legislation to Parliament to create a legal framework to control the use of cannabis for medical purposes, but the laws will not be debated until later in the year.

The federal Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is expected to make a decision on whether to reschedule cannabis as a medicine by the end of this month, and make it legal to dispense from June 1.

Cameron Dick said he would change state regulations to ensure some Queensland specialists could prescribe cannabis as soon as it is approved by the TGA.

"This will allow Queensland patients to take immediate advantage of the final rescheduling decision without having to wait for the passage of the bill," Mr Dick said.

"Once the bill commences, the regulation amendments will be repealed."

Last week, the State Government granted a Queensland family Australia's first legal medically supervised cannabis treatment.

However, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk warned this was not a first step toward broader decriminalisation of the drug.

"This is in no way a green light for the recreational use of cannabis nor for people to grow their own cannabis, even if for therapeutic use," she said.

"However, the lawful production of medicinal cannabis does present an opportunity for Queensland businesses to supply goods to this expanding market."

The molecules found in the eggs of White Rock sea snails are not only tackling normal cancer cells, they have proved potent killers of chemotherapy-resistant lymphomas and uterine sarcomas, researchers say.

Researchers from the University of Wollongong (UW) believe the class of molecules will also be effective in fighting breast, prostate and colorectal cancers.

Dr Kara Perrow found the chemicals - called N-alkylisatins - killed 100 per cent of drug resistant cancer cells in the lab in just 48 hours.

"When we compared that to a clinically used anti-cancer drug Doxorubicin, we found that that drug could only effectively kill 10 per cent of those cells," Dr Perrow said.

Drug resistance is one of the biggest problems facing scientists - particularly when it comes to chemotherapy.

"So when a patient comes in and is administered a chemotherapeutic drug they may initially respond to that treatment but over time the development of multi-drug resistance means that that patient eventually will relapse with the disease," Dr Perrow said.

This means scientists are forever on the hunt in new environments and creatures for chemical compounds and drugs to fight drug resistance.

"By looking at the ocean and marine molluscs and we've been lucky enough to find a hit compound there," Dr Perrow said.

In 2002, in collaboration with Southern Cross University, scientists discovered that the White Rock snail egg formula had surprising medicinal properties.

"They can't run away from predators, they can't run after their prey, and so many of them use chemical communication and defence to a lot greater extent than larger organisms," UW medicinal chemist Danielle Skropeta said.

"They're essentially little chemical factories - like powerhouses of chemical production."

But only recently — and with the help of colleagues in the chemistry department — scientists discovered they could target chemo-resistant cancers.

"The problem is particularly that cancer cells have these pumps present in their cells and cell membrane and these pumps... they can actually pump out compounds from within the cell like an anticancer drug and hence make that drug ineffective," UW Emeritus Professor John Bremner said.

"So it makes the cell resistant to that drug and that's a really big problem."

(NaturalNews) They might not be welcome in your yard, but it turns out that dandelions have tremendous potential when it comes to helping people who are suffering from cancer.

Chemo-resistant melanoma is now the most common type of cancer affecting Americans aged 25 to 29. The only option doctors can presently offer these patients is surgery to remove the tumor and its surroundings, followed by immunotherapy, which does not usually work when the melanoma has metastasized.

However, all that looks set to change, thanks to a humble plant that many people pull out of their gardens and throw away. At the University of Windsor in Ontario, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has shown that dandelion root extract can cause human melanoma cells to essentially kill themselves without leading to any type of toxicity. In fact, their initial study saw cancer cells disintegrating within 48 hours, while healthy cells remained unaffected. The study was led by Professor Siyaram Pandey, PhD.

Concentrated dandelion root tea being used in clinical trials

These promising results prompted the non-profit organization Mitacs to reach out to AOR Inc., a Calgary company that produces natural health products, in order to develop a dandelion tea powder that is significantly stronger than that found in health food stores. They accomplish this by milling dandelion root, creating an extract from it, and then freeze-drying it into a powder that patients dissolve into hot water and then drink.

AOR is producing 6,000 doses of this tea for a clinical trial that will take place at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, and will involve 30 patients with various types of cancer, including leukemia, who have not had success with conventional therapy.

A statement on the website of the Dandelion Root Project at the University of Windsor says:

Since the commencement of this project, we have been able to successfully assess the effect of a simple water extract of dandelion root in various human cancer cell types, in the lab and we have observed its effectiveness against human T cell leukemia, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, pancreatic and colon cancers, with no toxicity to non-cancer cells. Furthermore, these efficacy studies have been confirmed in animal models (mice) that have been transplanted with human colon cancer cells.

Researcher and medical oncologist Dr. Caroline Hamm said that some of her patients have noted improvements after drinking dandelion root tea from health food stores. The concentrated tea could prove to be even more effective, potentially saving countless lives.

Dandelion could help fight a number of cancers

A 2008 study published in the International Journal of Oncology showed that dandelion tea reduced breast and prostate cancer cells. A subsequent report in the same journal showed that a dietary supplement that contained dandelion suppressed the growth of prostate cancer cells. Dandelion extracts have also demonstrated their efficacy in treating breast cancer and leukemia in traditional Chinese medicine as well as in Native American medicine.

In addition, dandelion extracts show promise in fighting colon and pancreatic cancer cells.

Dandelion has plenty of other benefits, too

The benefits of dandelions don't end there. The root can also stimulate the secretion of bile, relieve allergies, reduce cholesterol and cleanse the liver. In addition, it contains high amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin K.

This is just one of many natural cures that is showing great promise in treating conditions that conventional medicine has failed to conquer. Countless more natural remedies are likely growing in our planet's forests, oceans and even deserts, just waiting to be discovered.
