When Labor were in power the lefties were on here saying "Why should we stop the boats?"

Now they are trying to take credit for stopping them

As a
Greens 1st
,
Labor 2nd
supporter - I have never supported the inhumane treatment of refugees, or the
cost ineffective
"offshore solutions"

... but that is NOT the issue, HERE

... which is

What REALLY "stopped the boats" ?*

* ... The
LibNat's
"Operation Sovereign Borders" - as Abbott and Morrison claim - or
Labor's
"New Guinea Solution" ?

Liberals stopped the boats.  Labor did a tiny bit of effort near the end of their term solely for votes.  but since they started the problem they get zero kudos for a half-hearted barely effective job os slowing it a bit.

the boats stopped under Abbotts govt with an actual policy to stop them.

You COULD say that ( ... if you wanted to go "off topic") - but it is a
STATISTICAL FACT
that the
Rudd Government
ALSO were responsible for turning the trend AROUND

For what? Finally waking up and realising he stuffed up? For finally realising that the only solution was to adopt the exact same policy the Coalition had advocated since 2007 and the exact same policy Howard put into place? For that, we can thank Mr Howard and Mr Abbott for providing the ideas to Mr Rudd. Better late than never, eh Kevvy?

Yes, too true. It is much more humane that they die at sea or smashed against rocks like rag dolls.

I have talked about that, and how the Malaysian Solution would have stopped that.

Now I am commenting about how the AS issue is causing many in Aust to lose their humanity.

Neo cons talk about saving lives and yet they are happy to send desperate refugees to one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in our region..Cambodia.

Lets face it...the whole "saving lives" thing is just crap.

The lack of an effective processing offshore without detention is the problem.. or even an onshore processing facility that works without the concentration camp mentality intruding.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison not telling truth on asylum seeker arrivals

4th Feb 2014

There has been an 80 per cent reduction. However, the reduction really began under the former
Rudd Labor Government
- with the so called
"New Guinea Solution"

http://www.abc.net.au/news/linkableblob/5144104/data/asylum-seekers-arrived-by-b...

On November 29 Mr Morrison said: "In the previous government after the announcement of the regional resettlement arrangement an average of 461 people not including crew were turning up on just over six boats every week. Since the commencement of Operation Sovereign Borders this has fallen by more than 80 per cent to just 78 people illegally arriving per week on less than two boats not including crew."

Mr Morrison and other Liberal MPs have been repeating these figures over the past few weeks, saying the reduction is the result "of our efforts under Operation Sovereign Borders".

Labor, however, disagrees. On the ABC's Q&A program on November 25, Opposition treasury spokesman Chris Bowen repeatedly said Mr Morrison's figures were "just not right". When ABC Fact Check asked for the basis of his comments, a spokesman for Mr Bowen said the comparison period the Coalition was using was "disingenuous".

"Labor had only announced the PNG arrangement on 19 July and from experience, there is always a lag in terms of policy measures having an effect," the spokesman said.
"If you look at the two weeks prior to the election, a month or so after the PNG arrangement had been announced and was being implemented, there was clearly an effect being experienced."

( ... refer back to above graph)

What the numbers show

Fact Check has collated data on asylum seeker boat arrivals from July 19, when former prime minister Kevin Rudd announced his regional resettlement arrangement with Papua New Guinea, to November 29, when Mr Morrison made his claim.

The crux of Mr Rudd's announcement was that no more asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat would be settled in Australia

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-12-10/scott-morrison-not-telling-full-story-asyl...
.

Rudd's PNG non-solution was all about sending only single males to PNG, and families were still being sent here.
And yes, the statistics do support a slow down of illegal boat arrivals at the time however nothing like the Coalition achieved soon after OSB was implemented.
And once again, Rudd's policy was destined to fail and if allowed to continue would have been a dud rubber.
The electorate was right in handing Labor it's worst defeat in 100 years and throwing the bums out.
