The real rules to investing
Sep 19th, 2014 at 8:04am

I've studied investing for decades.
I've studied businesses and finances for generations.

Here are the real rules I see to investing.
One's I have read in many books, one that is 93 years old.

1/ Never give your money to someone else to invest.

Sounds like 'common sense' to me: don't give my money to someone else to spend.
I know from some Lottery Winners, that they get bombarded by people who want to invest their money.
They feed upon the 'greed' that the person is (sometimes instantly) addicted to making/needing to make MORE money!! So many Lottery Winners, especially during the 80's & 90's - blew it all away.

Saying that, there have been a number of 'Finance Advisers' who say that the 'average' Australian (est: $70.000 a year earnings Shocked) can't/shouldn't rely upon SAVINGS to get ahead and must INVEST if they want to get 'ahead'. Savings is a long forgotten hope.

2/ If you get a windfall during your life.
Put it in a term deposit of 2 for at least 6 months.
Keep living your life as it is/was.
After 6 months/2 years that money will emotionally be yours.
You will be used to looking at a statement saying "XYZ, we have your funds of $2,300,000 ready for reinvestment."

Sure, spend up to 5% of it for fun.

Oh yeah, I don't know how I face the day every morning and wonder how on earth I'm going to be able to do this for another 30 years.

Any investment that looks too good to be true........probably is.

Which is another way of saying that increased returns are a result of increased risk

Compulsory super... my work pays super for me, and I'm over 65 now, but I still pay a heap more than management costs for insurance in case I cant work again - which only covers me to age 65..

Work that one out.. I will come Monday (Jimmy Buffet).. I'm paying through the nose for an insurance I can never claim.

That's what happens when someone else invests your money for you.
